Re: NFL wants Super Bowl halftime performers to pay for the privilege

I understand everyone's view on this, I really do. The price of tickets and the fact that a nylon Jersey with Drew's name on it can cost as much as $300 in the NFL shop is pretty outrageous. I can go on Nike's website and design an entire custom uniform for the same price.

What drove this was the fact that Super Bowl commercials are going for $4mm/30s block. The Super Bowl Half-time is around 30 minutes, 15 minutes +/- of entertainment and the remaining being set up and take down.

15/2 = 30 x $4mm = $120 Million in advertising time.

Is the question 'should the NFL charge people to preform' or is it 'should entertainers get $120 million worth of advertising for free'?

Wow, with that type of logic, you should run a hair metal club on the Sunset Strip! In those clubs, promoters used to charge bands money to play on their stage, for "exposure." Then charge cover at the door, which the promoters also kept.

Why should teams get free advertising of their logos/apparel, having their brand names and trademarks in the end zone, the whole game? They should pay for that. Why should the players get paid to play, when they are actually getting free advertisement for their charities and their endorsement products, by having their names mentioned when they make a play? The refs are usually successful businessmen, lawyers, judges, entrepeneurs and the like. They benefit from name recognition and status from having their name associated with refereeing a Super Bowl. You want them to pay for the privilege, too?

On a related but more musical topic, I think Bruno Mars was a huge break from the past tradition and shows where the NFL is headed with this. Past Super Bowl artists were longtime popular artists, with deep catalogs that people knew and wanted to hear. Bruno Mars has only two albums, and was (relatively) unknown compared to most acts who've previously played the Bowl in the last two decades.

I think the league has finally decided that, it's jumped the shark, and no one really cares WHAT the halftime entertainment is anymore, as long as it is "entertaining" (ie fireworks, light show and dancing). I think the days of the "big" established music entertainers playing the Super Bowl a la Rolling Stones, ZZ Top, Janet Jackson, Eminem, Paul McCartney, etc are history, the same way that "Pass, Punt & Kick" and big on-the-field groups of kids or dancers like "Up With People" used to be EVERYWHERE at halftime shows in the '70s for a while, and then disappeared off the face of the earth completely.

I think you have to take into consideration why is it that the half time show even exists, and the benefit it provides to the NFL, if any.

and just guessing here...those bands still paid

The first rule of supply and demand is that something's value is only, only, only what someone will pay for it. The NFL has the golden ticket- why not profit from it?
Initial reports are they are asking for $10mil. Small investment for a 10X return. Maybe one of those metal hair bands from the strip will pony it up. If they don't, 100% someone else will

And how do you figure 10x return?

Are you following the articles? Several sources say the NFL is putting a $120,000,000 valuation on its 115 million viewers. I rounded it down

So the NFL is putting a $120,000,000 value on it's 115 million viewers. Cool. Now, how do you figure any act that agrees to pay $10,000,000 will make $100,000,000 in return?

But it does benefit the NFL, the NFL owns the most watched 15 minute block of time on the planet. It sells commercial time within that block.

1/2 time all 15mins, SuperBowl 30mins. It's not all about the players. It's all about the business.

What I am saying is, without the acts, would the NFL own the most watched 15 minute block on the planet?
