Tom Coughlin: Want excitement? Move extra points to the 1
Giants coach Tom Coughlin says the NFL went in the wrong direction in its preseason extra point experiment.
Coughlin says that if the idea is to make extra points a more exciting play, moving kicks back to the 15-yard line while keeping two-point conversion attempts at the 2-yard line wasn’t the right way to do it. Coughlin says the NFL should have moved all point-after attempts to the 1-yard line, to encourage coaches to go for two. “I didn’t think much of it when it was suggested,” Coughlin said, via Conor Orr of the Star-Ledger. “There are some ways to change that part of it if the intent is to make it more exciting. I think that certainly would be one of them. I think you have to be aware of the fact that it’s a 33-yard field goal in November when the wind’s blowing and it’s snowing here and it’s… in Miami it’s 75 degrees. It’s a little different in different parts of the country. You do have to be aware of that. I would say probably the ball will stay at the two, extra points. But if you really want to make it interesting put it at the one.” read more | |

Well I dislike that idea less than the long extra point.

I love it. Putting more emphasis on the kicking game is poo in my opinion. Especially for us this year. I have a bad feeling that our kicking situation this year could rob us.

The long extra point isn't a rule yet, it was just for the first 2 weeks of pre-season. I don't think they ever change it.

Re: Tom Coughlin: Want excitement? Move extra points to the 1
The Philly/Detroit game in the snow blizzard last year was TREMENDOUSLY exciting, easily one of the most exciting NFL games I've ever watched...because it was snowing so hard that nobody could kick ANYTHING, so they had to go for 2 every time. So every touchdown, you had to line up and score ANOTHER touchdown (2 pt conversion) right after you scored the first one. Some were missed, and some were made, and until Philly pulled away late in the 4th, the game was constantly hanging in the balance, because no one knew what would happen next, or whether the next extra point conversion would be made or missed....even when one team had the lead, each extra point had the whole game (tie vs. loss) potentially riding on the attempt.
It was a GREAT game. Having said that, if every game were like that, every week, I would lose interest in the sport. Going for 2 all the time, is just TOO CRAY CRAY. |
