It's a fair point.

I removed two optional pads either side of the chest plate when I played. I caught a pass over the middle and the DB tackled me as a ran down field, I landed on the point of the ball and without swearing it really winded my chest.

One would think that that they could make something very small that would be of no risk hurting the player.
