It's a fair point.
I removed two optional pads either side of the chest plate when I played. I caught a pass over the middle and the DB tackled me as a ran down field, I landed on the point of the ball and without swearing it really winded my chest. |

One would think that that they could make something very small that would be of no risk hurting the player.
