Wilson now top paid player in the NFL

Source: Seahawks make Wilson top-paid in NFL

Quote:

The Seattle Seahawks and Russell Wilson have reached agreement on a four-year, $140 million extension that includes a $65 million signing bonus and makes the quarterback the highest-paid player in the NFL, a source told ESPN's Adam Schefter on Tuesday morning.

With the four years added to his contract, Wilson, 30, is contractually tied to the Seahawks through the 2023 season, the source said.

In addition to topping Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers' contract as the richest ever with a new-money annual average of $35 million per season, Wilson's signing bonus also sets a record. Rodgers was first in both categories at $33.5 million and $57.5 million, respectively, on the extension he signed last summer.
If you've followed the trend where QBs become the top paid in the league, you'll see that none of them have made the playoffs after their deal. Brees in 2012, Flacco in 2014, Luck in 2016, and Rodgers in 2017 all come to mind.

Seattle ain't making the playoffs this year.

Just wait until it's time to pay Patrick Mahomes in a few years.

Yikes.

Mahomes has already been labeled the next GOAT, his pay day is going to be insanity.

Russell is an above average QB. He's definitely not top paid player in the league QB. They overpaid, and it'll have significant repercussions. They would have had a better chance to win by finding a new QB. They should have let him walk.

Not quite.

How good is Wilson:

2nd all time QB Passer Rating

5th all time yards per attempt

12th all time completion %

10th all time TD%

4th all time Int %

19th leading active rusher (for any position)
Only QB in history to start off his career with two 100 passer ratings his first two seasons.

He has led the NFL with a 110.1 passer rating.

He has led the NFL with 34 TD passes,

He holds the NFL record for most TD passes in a 4th quarter.

He did hold the rookie TD record of 24 (with Peyton).

He has that rare three times more TD passes than INT's.

No QB in history has won more games in their first seven seasons.

Put what he has accomplished with wins/SB/stats combined and his first seven seasons on a par with anyone.

He never sat on a bench, he walked right in and took over.

No QB can match this in their first seven seasons,

Two SB

comp%...64.2

Above average my ass. I'd be hard pressed to not take him over any other QB if I were starting a team based on his age and accolades.

He's above average, probably top 5-7 QB right now. He's not worth what they are paying him. I don't care how many different things you quote.

That "highest paid player" will only last until the next big name QB signs his contract. Doesn't mean anything.

Cool. You have an opinion. You're entitled to it even if you're wrong.

I like Wilson. Sometimes a guy means more to his team than just his stats, and Wilson's stats are beyond solid. I don't know if they overpaid or not, but Wilson is not a flash in the pan (obviously), he's a damn good QB.

Just for my own understanding... Why is it that you would pick starters based on age?

That isn't the only criteria I listed. But why wouldn't you? If I'm looking long term, I'd rather have him for the next 5-7 years than anyone else. He is their offense. That team is void of talent and they still made the playoffs last year. He's the sole reason.

Above average my ass. I'd be hard pressed to not take him over any other QB if I were starting a team based on his age and accolades.

And yet despite this, he would've never got to those 2 SBs without his team's DEFENSE bailing him out.

The 2013 Seahawks had a historical defensive unit, one of the best in the last 20 years and is only overshadowed with how they lost the SB the next year and the 2015 Broncos' defense stealing the spotlight. The defense was the deciding factor though in both of their playoff runs. They had a last minute stop against the 49ers and held Denver to 8 points in 2013. In 2014, they shut Aaron Rodgers down in a game Wilson struggled in and Brady's 2 INTs were how they got that 24-14 lead in the SB.

When Seattle wasn't blowing teams out, they were barely winning games by the skin of their teeth in 2013 where that offense struggled. Same thing happened in 2014. Wilson won a playoff game where he had 5 INTs (vs Green Bay). How often does that happen? I don't think Brees has ever won a game where he had more than 3 INTs. It helped that the Seahawks defense shut down Rodgers and only allowed 1 TD in that game.

He's a good QB, but worth what they paid him? Hell no. I'm glad Seattle paid him over the moon though cause we won't have to worry about them.
