This will go on for the rest of the year. They are calling things much more now than they previously did.

Remember the era when a solid running back could be the anchor of the entire offense and carry an entire team on his back (Jim Brown, OJ, Barry Sanders, Emmitt Smith, Tony Dorsett, Adrian Petersen, guys like that).

Now it seems like running backs are a dime a dozen, they are not high in demand, and now even feature running backs are literally having trouble getting paid the big money, because they are considered disposable or plug-and-play. This pretty much reached a peak with the Le'Veon Bell debacle, although there are plenty of other teams that went through similar changes of moving away from high-paid "feature" backs to unknowns or UDFA's or "running-back-by-committee."

It's weird, it's as if the entire NFL is rising up to make the role of the feature star running back less important.

I blame it on fantasy football. I haven't done any serious research on it, but my gut tells me that QB's and wide receivers typically generate more points than a grinding, boring running back.

Simple math, a running back would pretty much have to have a banner career high day, to get as many fantasy points as a fairly typical Brees, Rodgers or Rivers type elite QB outing on a Sunday. Elite QB's sell jerseys, and generate media storylines, running backs don't.

That's just my personal take on it -- it's a pass happy league now, and has been for many years, and taking away big running plays with ticky-tacky holding penalties, is just the latest part of that trend to make the game more "appealing" to fantasy types.

One thing I noticed playing fantasy, if passing is prolific for a couple years it normally reverts back to running for a couple.

I assumed it would be passing this year for a few reasons so I drafted all WR2's, no WR1's. One reason; Chiefs, Cardinals style offenses are heavy pass. It wasn't like that a few years ago. It also effects everyone they play. Those teams also have to pass more.
