Moore and conservative Canadians

I heard on the radio where Michael Moore has had a complaint filed against him in Canada based on a national law prohibiting foreigners from politicing for or against an individual.

Apparently, shortly before the election he went to Canada and asked people not to vote for the conservative candidate in the election. A conservative college student filed the complaint. What do you think?

Sounds like a good law to me that is intended to keep foreigners out of Canadian politics. My opinion is Moore should stay out of the politics of both our countries, but the law fits him good. Maybe the penalty will be 1000 years chopping ice blocks in the northern provinces!

While I don\'t really like Moore, I think that any law like the one you\'re describing is assinine. IMO, the only limit on free speech should be if that speech is harassing (immediately - i.e. directly harmful to an undeserving person), or if it creates an immediate threat (i.e. running down the street yelling fire when there isn\'t one).

So, is it fair for a foreign government to come here and politic for or against Bush or Kerry? I say no. There\'s no way to judge the motives in play there. I know, you can\'t judge the motives of citizens either but at least they are citizens.

What if a French celebrity makes a movie about outlawing handguns which turns out to be very controversial and very popular. That celeb comes over here and politics against the presidential candidate that is not in favor of gun control. Should he/she be allowed to do this?

Absolutely! The same way OUR PRESIDENT makes strong statements in the INTERNATIONAL PRESS about the leaders of other countries (Iraq, Cuba, etc.). Censorship is always bad. Nazi Germany, Communist China, the Soviet Union, and Iraq are a few countries that limit outside opinion from getting to the populous of their country. Is that what you want America to be like?

What about the actors who always end up supporting a candidate. Is that OK? Many of them are NOT US CITIZENS. Why is it OK for them to SUPPORT a candidate, but not to oppose one?

Yea, that\'s true. It\'s based on an old law on the books which I\'m sure will be removed after this.

Seriously, the problem I have with Moore\'s actions are that he isn\'t interested in what is good for Canada when he does such. He is interested in making Canada what he wants it to be.

Your free speach argument is strong. Especially in the US where political speach is the most protected form of speach. A law like this would never fly here just i\'m sure the Canadian courts will quash this complaint.

Free Speech is fine, but when a person fails (refuses) to include both sides, when he/she is as blatantly biased as this jerk, then it\'s not worth the paper it\'s printed on or the film it\'s recorded on or the time it takes to otherwise listen to it. In America he can proclaim it from the highest Mountain. That\'s his right, but how people fail to see through propaganda such as Moore\'s film, to me, is insane. I heard once before somewhere that liberalism isn\'t a political stance or a belief but that it\'s a disease. The more of Moore and his like I see the more I\'m inclined to agree. They boo\'d Linda Rhonstadt clean off the stage and straight out of the Casino in Vegas a few days ago for supporting \'ol Fat Boy during her show. That\'s America at work ya\'ll, and I couldn\'t be happier!
