Watch the Soul Rebels play with GZA on NPR's Tiny Desk series
Wu-Tang Clan founding member GZA brought the Soul Rebels ? New Orleans' preeminent hip-hop-backing brass ensemble ? to NPR for a rare appearance from the chess-master emcee for a Tiny Desk concert. The Soul Rebels back three classics from GZA's landmark 1995 album Liquid Swords: "Living in the World Today, "Duel of the Iron Mic" and the title track, with the Soul Rebels recreating RZA's staccato samples propelling GZA's verses. The band currently is paired up with Talib Kweli and recently has backed hip-hop icons*Rakim, Slick Rick*and Nas, as well as New Orleans' Curren$y and Pro Era founder Joey Bada$$, who told Gambit that when he first heard the band in 2014, "the chemistry was already there. I could tell they were into my music, and when I saw them live the first time I became a big fan of theirs as well.? |
