http://www.sun.com/desktop/workstati...1500/index.xml I'm a Unix Sys Admin who greatly favors Solaris over the other types (hate the "distro" or "flavor" thing) of Unix and Unix-like operating systems... I got this baby to replace my old Blade 100, so I can work from home... |

RE: It has to get started somehow, so...
That's a kick a$$ machine - but give me Fedora!
Actually, I am sad to say my main PC at home is running XP. Actually, it's a dual boot, so there is some redemption in that. It's a nice machine. P4 - 3 Ghz (800 FSB chipset), 1GB RAM (PC400 if I remember correctly) - a pair of 120GB SATA, DVDRW+/-, CDRW... it's not bad. It's getting a little dated now, but it's still on the upper end of things. It's custom built, and when I first got this thing running it was blowing people away. I need to jump to 2 GB of RAM. It's got a nice GForce graphics card too. 128 MB of on-board RAM I think. |

WhoDat, that computer for a home computer is not getting dated. The average consumer is running a PIII with Windows ME, which means they are having a lot of trouble. But techincally for functionality that PC will last for years until the 64 bit computer chipset takes over, but that will be another 3 years.
If you're a PC gamer then yeah it's getting old, but with PC gamers a video card is old pretty much just after you buy it. |

.. WhoDat, you didn't strike me as a Linux scumba.. er.. user
...Halo is right.. unless you want to play the very latest games, you have computer for some time.. ..my Blade 100 died last month after 5 and a half years of excellent service... it had a 500MHz SPARC, with 1GB RAM, and dual 18GB disks... if it weren't because it died a horrible death (involved a 2 year old and some, well, a lot, of milk) I wouldn't have thought about replacing it. |

Sure, it seems nice to Halo, but he's running this site off an IBM 433DX. Wicked machine Halo!
IBM 486, 33 Mhz DX processor, 4 MB of RAM, 85 MB HD, VGA color, and even a sound card. The thing boots right up to DOS 6!! DOS - that's a microsoft product, right Halo? LOL |

DOS... let me tell you about DOS. I can do DOS and when I'm working on computers with a client I use a DOS command in a prompt and they are like, "man what's that ancient language you are typing... you must be smart."
And I'm like "yeah I am smart and oh by the way that $100/hour to take that virus off your computer (you got because you were surfing porn the other night) buddy boy... because I'm so smart I know the ancient language." And they believe in me Nothing wrong with knowing some DOS. |

No, there's nothing wrong with knowing DOS. I still use DOS too. But do you really need to run the site on a 486?? LOL
