Claxton runner-up in Sixth Man voting
OKLAHOMA CITY – Following the most productive season of his five-year NBA career, New Orleans/Oklahoma City Hornets guard Speedy Claxton finished second in the Sixth Man of the Year voting. Memphis guard Mike Miller captured the annual award.
Among NBA players who started five or fewer games, Claxton led the entire league in assists (4.8 per game) and was second in scoring (12.3 points per game). The 28-year-old was also the Hornets’ third-leading scorer and topped New Orleans/Oklahoma City in points eight different games throughout the 2005-06 regular season. The Hofstra University product established career highs in scoring, games played and 3-point percentage. His 29-point output at Atlanta on Jan. 7 was an individual best for his career as well. Miller received 501 out of a possible 615 points, including 88 of a possible 123 first-place votes, from a panel of 123 sportswriters and broadcasters throughout the United States and Canada. Claxton took second with 205 points and Jerry Stackhouse of the Dallas Mavericks finished third with 162 points.
