Nate Robinson Released by Pelicans: Latest Details, Comments and Reaction

The New Orleans Pelicans waived Nate Robinson on Thursday, two days after the veteran point guard started the team's season opener against the Golden State Warriors.

New Orleans confirmed the move, which brings its roster to 14 players, on its official site. Marc Stein of ESPN reported the team is attempting to bring back Toney Douglas to fill the void:

Robinson, 31, drew the start against the reigning champions on opening night with Jrue Holiday sidelined. The team is playing it cautious with the 25-year-old guard, limiting his minutes and keeping him out of back-to-back situations as he tries to move forward from right leg problems.

Holiday returned to the lineup Wednesday, scoring 12 points in 21 minutes of action against the Portland Trail Blazers. Ish Smith served as the top reserve at the position, playing 29 minutes off the bench.

Robinson ended up playing 23 minutes in the two losses. He scored no points with four assists and four fouls while missing his only shot from the field.

Douglas appeared in 12 games for the Pelicans last season. He averaged 4.3 points and two assists. He signed with the Indiana Pacers during the offseason, but they let him go before the regular season started.

Although Robinson was once a dynamic asset off the bench for the New York Knicks a handful of years ago, he's struggled to make a consistent impact since undergoing ACL surgery in 2014. He didn't showcase his vintage burst with New Orleans, though the sample size was small.

He'll probably land elsewhere as injury issues arise around the league, but his days as a high-impact reserve may be a thing of the past.
