Toney Douglas to Pelicans: Latest Contract Details, Comments and Reaction
Needing depth at point guard, the New Orleans Pelicans signed veteran free agent Toney Douglas on Friday.
The Pelicans announced Douglas' signing in a press release, per NBA.com, though terms of the deal were not disclosed. Douglas' signing comes one day after New Orleans announced it waived Nate Robinson. ESPN.com's Marc Stein reported Thursday that Douglas was in talks with the Pelicans to return after he appeared in 12 games with the team last season. In the offseason, Douglas signed with the Indiana Pacers but was released on Oct. 26. He told Nate Taylor of the Indianapolis Star he did not leave there with any hard feelings: "I came here today just like if I had a three-year deal. I’m being honest. No nervous, no nothing. They have to make a decision. I felt like I played pretty well. You have to take advantage of the minutes you get at that certain time, and I feel like I played pretty good on both ends." New Orleans has a solid starting point guard in Jrue Holiday, but he has been limited early this season due to a right leg injury that caused him to sit out the opener. He did return Wednesday against the Portland Trail Blazers, scoring 12 points in just 21 minutes. Given Douglas' history with the Pelicans, even a brief one, and understanding of head coach Alvin Gentry's system, he will make a strong fit for the team while it waits for Holiday to get back to full strength.
