Jimmer Fredette to Pelicans: Latest Contract Details, Comments and Reaction
Jimmer Fredette has received yet another opportunity to continue pursuing an NBA career in signing with the New Orleans Pelicans on Tuesday.
The New York Knicks' NBA Development League affiliate, the Westchester Knicks, announced the news and indicated Fredette is the second player to be called up during the 2015-16 campaign. Ian Begley of ESPNNewYork.com reported Westchester will retain Fredette's D-League rights and added context to suggest his stay in New Orleans may be short-lived: Fredette was the 10th overall pick in the 2011 draft but never panned out with the Sacramento Kings, who bought out his contract in February 2014. The 26-year-old spent the rest of that season with the Chicago Bulls, had a brief stint in New Orleans in 2014-15 and most recently signed with the San Antonio Spurs but was waived before the start of this season. Although it's been a nomadic existence for the former BYU star in recent years, at least he's returning to a team who's evaluated him up close before and saw enough potential to offer him a second chance. Absent a legitimate chance to live up to his lottery draft-pick billing, Fredette's true ceiling is yet to be determined. Some may argue his lack of opportunities speak to his ability to make it in the Association. On the other hand, the sharpshooting guard has posted a per-36-minute average of 16.2 points to date. The Pelicans have an injury-prone backcourt between Jrue Holiday and Eric Gordon. Combo guard and functional small forward Tyreke Evans has yet to suit up for a game this season, while point guard Norris Cole has been out of the lineup amid the squad's 0-6 start. With a 33.5 team shooting percentage from beyond the arc, New Orleans could use a perimeter marksman like Fredette as insurance for that area of weakness as well as for depth purposes.
