Anthony Davis Injury: Pelicans Star Suffers Leg Contusion vs. Rockets
The New Orleans Pelicans will be holding their breath once again after Anthony Davis suffered an injury to his leg.
Per the Pelicans' public relations staff on Twitter, Davis will sit out the remainder of Friday's game against the Houston Rockets due to a lower-leg contusion. He was injured during the first half of the Pelicans' game against the Rockets and briefly returned in the third quarter before being taken out for good. Davis started the season injured almost as soon as the Pelicans began playing in preseason games. He played just six minutes against the Houston Rockets on October 12 before going down with a sprained ankle that was expected to keep him out 10 to 15 days. Fortunately, Davis has since stayed on the court during the regular season to this point. He is also playing a career-high 38.4 minutes per game, per Basketball-Reference.com. Being able to stay healthy has been a career-long problem for Davis. The three-time All-Star has missed at least 14 games in each of his first four NBA seasons, causing problems for the Pelicans as they try to gain relevance in the Western Conference. Because Davis has become so prone to injuries, the Pelicans will have to rely on backup power forward Terrence Jones. Jones doesn't have the diverse skill set Davis does—there are a small handful of players in the NBA who do—but he's been a solid bench player in the past, averaging at least 15 points per 36 minutes over the past three seasons. The Pelicans have not been a good team even with Davis leading the league in scoring (30.7 points per game) and blocks (2.9), so another injury at this point in the season should lead to head coach Alvin Gentry cutting back his minutes in an effort to minimize the amount of physical stress on his body.
