Report: LSU eyeing Saints defensive line coach Ryan Nielsen for defensive coordinator role

According to a report from Football Scoop, LSU plans to request permission to interview New Orleans Saints defensive line coach Ryan Nielsen to be the Tigers’ next defensive coordinator. Nielsen is under contract, so there is always a chance LSU could deny the request.

Nielsen, 29, played under Orgeron on the defensive line at Southern Cal in the late 1990s and early 2000s, then his first coaching job as a volunteer assistant was under Orgeron at Southern Cal in 2002. He later became Orgeron's defensive line coach at Ole Miss. He started his coaching rise through the college ranks before making his biggest splash at North Carolina State, where he coached up a first-round pick in Bradley Chubb. From 2013-2016, Nielsen was the defensive line/recruiting coordinator/run game coordinator with the Wolfpack. He was also a Broyles Award candidate in 2015 as one of the nation's top assistant coaches.

From 2017 through the current 2020 season, Nielsen has been the defensive line coach for the Saints. The Saints have been really productive in the trenches during that time, and he's coached up some really good talent there including Cameron Jordan, Marcus Davenport and then guys like Trey Hendrickson, who has blown up across recent seasons.
