Re: Fielding a team under the 2021 CAP
Maybe we can save some money on Taysom Hill also. If we see him as the starting QB we could likely reduce his 2021 number through restructuring with an extension but it would commit future money to him. If we do not see him as the starting QB he is a very expensive luxury to have a gadget player and backup qb when we are having to make very very deep cuts elsewhere, and there could be a trade market for him. If we trade him, we would need to spend money on Winston or another QB, but a new contract could likely be structured with less money up front.
If we are doomed to have a rebuilding season, it may be better not to extend our problems forward by giving guys like Peat giant cap numbers in 2022-2023, it may be better to just eat the money now and have a rebuilding year. Another way to do this would be to not spread Brees dead cap out and eat it all in 2021 if we can. |

Peat is a $9M cap hit for 2021 and a $19.4M dead money hit if you cut him. If you cut Peat you have to cut another 8 players to get under the cap. No one is going to be interested in Peat for a trade because of his contract. So you extend him, redistributing his cap liability until you can release him in another year without it gutting the team. May people are hung up on Peat, Peat is the least of out 2021 issues. |

The cap situation is more serious that people understand, one of the penalties for not getting under it is the loss of draft picks. We aren't 5-15 million over the CAP, we are more than 1/2 our allotted cap space over. |
