Fielding a team under the 2021 CAP
I was going to break down all the options this morning but while researching I found that someone had done it already. Most of what is here is the tl:dr of the article with personal comments added in.
I like how thorough he was because everyone is talking about how to get under the cap but no one is talking about how to field a roster. Getting under the cap does not get you on the field, you have to cut deeper to have space to replace the cut players. In our case 9 players The other option that I have not seen covered is to ignore the cap and eat the penalties. You don't have to be under the cap to take the field and the league is not going to make you forfeit games because they need the revenue. Penalties include include fines of up to $5 million for each violation, cancellation of contracts and/or loss of draft picks. If they cancel contracts we wont have enough players to field a team . Drew Brees Retirement Process Reduces cap by $24M Brees has the NFL's fourth-largest 2021 salary cap number at $36.15 million. Assuming Brees retires, he and the Saints should agree to reduce his $25 million 2021 base salary to $1.075 million, his 2021 league minimum salary, in order for $23.925 million cap relief to be gained instantly. The Saints would need to carry Brees on the roster until June 2 to keep the $11.5 million in bonus proration relating to his voiding 2022 and 2023 contract years from becoming a 2021 cap charge. At this point, Brees would be placed on the reserve/retired list and his $1.075 million base salary would also come off the books for additional cap relief. Instead of taking the full $22.65 million of dead money, a salary cap charge for a player no longer on a team's roster, in 2021 by placing Brees on the reserve/retired list prior to June 2, there would $11.15 in 2021 and $11.5 million in 2022 this way. Casualties Free's up $46M Alexander Cook Jenkins Easton Brown Sanders Morestead Murry Robinson Restructures/Extensions $40M in cap space Jordan Thomas Peat Lattimore or Ramczyk (or both) Total cap space made $110M https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/news/a...-restructures/ |

I read that 3 weeks ago and quite possibly posted it on here.

The defense needs to stay intact. This will help Winston, Hill, or whomever they bring in. That’s why they went 8-1 without Brees.

I don't understand extending Peat. If anything we need to cut or trade him and be done with that awful contract. Financially it's not likely, but I can't see paying Peat rather than replacing him. Good Lawd he's bad!
