Indeed. You either have a removable bowl or a carb (or both). I’ve still missed the carb on my friends bong before though because I was covering it with my right thumb and lighting with my left (lefty bong).

I had a bunch of bamboo in my back yard growing up and it was great for making bongs. I would make triple and quadruple chamber bongs by running aquarium air pump hoses from chamber to chamber. The nodes keep the chambers air and water tight. I cut the node off of the top chamber and drilled a hole for a thumb carb. You had to put water in the top section and blow in it to fill all the chambers. Back then you couldn’t just go out and buy a bowl so I would raid the plumbing section at Home Depot and made the bowls and stems out of whatever I could find. Supported my weed habit through high school selling them to friends.
