Saints have had trade conversations regarding Malcom Brown
The Saints have work to do in order to get under the salary cap and they are reportedly considering a move involving defensive tackle Malcom Brown.
Ian Rapoport of NFL Media reports that the team has had trade conversations involving Brown. Brown signed with the Saints two years ago and he’s starting all 32 games he’s played for the team in the regular season and playoffs. He had 61 tackles, three sacks, and a fumble recovery in the regular season and five tackles and a half-sack in three playoff outings. Trading or releasing Brown would clear over $4.9 million in cap space for the coming season. There would be plenty of other moves needed in order to get their cap in shape. | |

Re: Saints have had trade conversations regarding Malcom Brown
Unfortunately I think there’s gonna be some unpopular decisions made in the upcoming weeks, months......we are in pretty rough shape cap wise. I still believe we will be in pretty good shape this year. Gonna look different for sure, some good some bad, but we will be competitive.

It's a new NFL, new league.
I can somewhat see why the Saints are prioritizing the secondary (FA Marcus Williams) over our stout run defense. A lot of teams have become "pass happy". Small sample size, but I like Malcolm Roach. He showed a lot last season. |

Re: Saints have had trade conversations regarding Malcom Brown
Saints will likely let a few people go, but Loomis will guarantee more of the existing contracts and roll the debt forward betting the cap continues to increase...
With guaranteed revenue from television contracts, Mickster's betting on an $8M~$12M increase per year; but the black swan event this past year will make it even tougher... This is what happens when you fail to leave a little for rainy days; there will be no criticism from this from local press for fear of reprisal from Saints media whip Greg Bensel... While the market was bare at the time, front office overpaid for Andrus Peat, costing them one/both of the aforementioned, but limiting opportunities to upgrade LG in Free Agency... Glancing over individual contracts, cutting Janoris Jenkins, Malcolm Brown, Kwon Alexander, Trevor Siemian, and yes, possibly Thomas Morstead - yields approximately $25M in cap space... Michael Thomas, Cam Jordan should their contracts reworked with more guaranteed money, creating $15M~$20M, kicking debt down the road as Loomis does, betting on cap growth... The real coup will be extending Armstead for one add'l year with significant guaranteed money; this is why I'd try to do a sign/trade to get cap relief there, moving Ramczyk to LT... Indy, Jax, Denver would be good candidates for that deal... This is the corner Payton/Loomis has painted the Saints; with their tenureship, they're safe playing it this way, avoiding regular season losing streaks; but, even then, they're safe... We could also see Ramczyk and/or Lattimore extended this year to create even more space, but their agents may wait and go to market with them next season... Hendrickson played himself from the Saints, and I wish him well wherever he lands, so long as it's not the A-T-L... Mr. Marcus may have been a foregone conclusion with the signing of Malcolm Jenkins last season despite an up and coming Gardner already on the roster who was a steal at safety... MJ can now be used as leverage vs Mr. Malcolm (perhaps intentionally) and Gardner can move to a more natural position of SS where he'll likely flourish; I'd never have brought back MJ... Payton and Loomis will reveal all in the next two weeks as the new NFL year comes to pass... |
It's not that my way is the right way, I just make the right way my way...

As you said, a pass happy league... Linebacker will be critical to get right, but you only need two~three for defensive package if you're running 4-3 variants... |

Tampa won with a defense that created pressure up front with veterans. Made plays all over the middle with elite speed LBs. Secondary just had to be near their guy.

The thing is it's easy to see the drop off in run defense when Brown is out. I'd extend Brown and find the money somewhere else.

Players have to be cut or traded. Names we all like. I'd rather focus on skill players and replace 300lb space eaters. https://www.spotrac.com/nfl/tools/ro...rleans-saints/ |
