Saints create $13.4M in cap room with restructured deals for stars Demario Davis and Cameron Jordan
The Saints entered the offseason with the worst salary cap situation in football, standing tens of millions above the announced floor. Both points remain true a month later. But they put another sizable dent in their debt Saturday. New Orleans restructured the contracts of linebacker Demario Davis and defensive end Cameron Jordan to create $13,443,750 million of cap room, NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport reported. They're the latest in a series of moves since the Super Bowl aimed at approaching the league's soft minimum. The first was renegotiating Drew Brees' deal, which shaved off more than $24 million of his 2021 cap hit. In the past week, the Saints restructured contracts for defensive tackle David Onyemata and kicker Wil Lutz and released tight ends Jared Cook and Josh Hill and punter Thomas Morstead. More movement is inevitable for New Orleans, which is still about $49 million above the $180 million floor, per Over The Cap. Trading away notable names could come next. But the club is making headway on what might feel like an endless endeavor. |

So at this point we have to extend Lattimore, Ramczyk and Alexander. That’ll get us really close to being under.

The front office have known the minimum cap of $175 million since the CBA was finalized in July. They have been planning all of these move since then. The extra bump of $5 million or more with the latest estimate just makes it a bit easier for them. They are not flying by the seats of their pants. This is all well planned for quite some time.

They've known it would jump but let's be honest when Loomis initially sorted these deals he thought he was dealing with a 200ml plus cap. That isn't a criticism as nobody could see this coming. But it shows how planning on a continously jumping cap can be perilous in a worst case scenario

Keep an eye out for possible trades or straight out cuts. It's going to be tougher this year to work the salary cap magic Mickey is known for. Tough but not impossible. Without a doubt we will lose a couple of fan favorites.

Restructure, backloading deals and continue to draft well is the name of the game. I think Armstead is next in line for a restructure. |

Personally, I am willing to pay him top money to start 3/4 of the games because he so dominant. Not only that, he's been able to play more and more games the last couple of years. |
