Don't forget Tony Romo. Sean believed in his skill set when Parcells was ready to move on from him.

Turned into a solid NFL QB with good coaching.

I think Payton gave Hill his obligatory shot last year. He owes him nothing. He knows Winston is the guy. Won’t know if he’s a suitable replacement until we see him in action but I’m more optimistic with him at QB than I would be if it were anyone else. We got the best guy we can afford and the fact Winston took another one year deal says a lot.

The pundits are already predicting a record number of one year deals this off-season. We know the cap is going to skyrocket next season based upon the new broadcast rights predictions alone, the question is by how much. Thus the one year deals. It helps us as it gives us the test year with Winston, as well.

I like this deal; low risk, high reward. I hope Winston is our starting QB week 1.

I wasn’t either but as I said earlier the fact he was willing to take a one year deal this early in FA tells me he’s humble and is willing to work for it. I get the feeling he’s matured a lot. We will see.

I have a slightly different take, not on Winstons capabilities but on his possible ceiling. I don’t recall anyone suspecting Drew Brees would become why he did while he was with San Diego which changes the formulation for me. Maybe.... just maybe Sean Payton was the factor that put Drew over the top and just maybe he can take Winston there as well?

As far as for public opinion, more than one B&G member didn’t want or believe in Drew Brees in 2006.

The ONLY things that gives me pause are the fact that his contract is 1 year and no other team in need scooped him up with a cheap multi year contract... I won’t speculate as to why, smarter football people that me are making those decisions I just recognize them as flags.

I hope he earns 5.5 and never sees the field. Complete waste of money.

I would say that with the abnormally low cap this year and the expectations for future caps to explode upward based upon all of the broadcast rights projections (could easily double the existing contracts) in the following years, franchises and agents alike are likely hesitant to lock themselves into long term deals at this time. That's why one year deals are going to be more common that ever this off-season. At least that's the opinion of more the one familiar with the inner workings of NFL finances that I have heard over the past few days.

Did you know Winston is ranked #29 on the top 100 free agent list and the #2 QB on the same list?
Sean Payton is the quarterback wisperer.

Will he keep Aaron Brooks' old number?

I've thought of Winston as Brooks 2.0 for a while now. That's not a terrible thing. The Saints got their first playoff win with Brooks and Haslett as coach. Payton is a much better coach than Haslett.
