Sean Payton: I think we’re set at quarterback

Drew Brees did the expected on Sunday and announced his retirement from the NFL, which left the Saints to move forward by re-signing Jameis Winston to a one-year contract on Monday.

Winston joined the team in 2020 and served as a backup to Brees with Taysom Hill. Hill remains with the club and Payton was asked on The Dan Patrick Show Tuesday if the team is set at the position.

“I think we are. I think we are,” Payton said, via Amie Just of NOLA.com.

That would mean Hill or Winston will start in Week One. Hill started four games while Brees was sidelined by rib and lung injuries last season, but Payton said that no one has a leg up at this point.

“I’ve told both of them, ‘The two of you are gonna compete for this position,'” Payton said. “They understand it. They’ll come in. We’ve already had a chance to see both of them to some degree.”

Florio left out the most important quote from Payton:

Quote:

"I think we are, and look, there will be a few calls we'll make -- but our goal coming into the offseason was to obviously re-sign Jameis," Payton said. "Taysom played for us in four games last year and we'll let those guys go to work and I'm excited about it. I'm excited about those two.

Those guys are fun to be around. I told both of them they are going to compete for this position. Now, there are a few things that may still be out there but I see those two competing for this position."

The Saints don't have the resources to trade for Wilson or Watson. And unless they find a way to trade up in the draft, I think Winston is as good a signing as we could get.

He knows the system. He should have an actual preseason this year. And I am sure Drew will be a phone call away should he need any advice.

So, unless someone falls to the Saints at 28, I think Winston is the guy over Hill.

I would like to see Jacksonville send Gardner Minshew to the Saints to complete the Malcom Brown trade. At a minimum he could be a very nice backup and probably an upgrade over Trevor Siemian.

I don’t believe there will be a trade for QB or moving up for a one either. We’re broke , we have the 28th pick no leverage what so ever. We need a corner jack rabbit gone . edge rusher , cam getting long in the tooth left guard overpaid and buffet addicted and a LB if Baun is not what we thought he was, and on the Jamison theory, he’s our starter we all saw what happens when taysom don’t tuck it and run, he’s strip-sacked more than a slim- Jim , we all know it we just have to believe it.

So if all your eggs are in the JW basket we are screwed. There was a reason he was benched for hill.

Look my eggs are all in whoever takes first snap . So I guest I’m screwed no one else ,he was benched because he didn’t no the offense, taysom has been aroun from 3 years before him .never heard in a long season he’s benched for hill? U want Mac Jones , which is the only one u might grab Mac Jones at 28 when u can get him in the 2 rd what happens to him when he gets pressure from real edges.

K, an argument can be made that when Drew Bees missed time, the starting of Hill, over Winston, effectively was a benching. It’s an argument I won’t make but I understand the logic arriving at that point.

1) Brees no longer starting.

2) Both Taysom and Winston on the active roster.

3) Taysom starts, Winston sits on the bench.

Once again, I don’t think it’s a “benching” as that implies a previous full time starter was put on the bench in favor of someone else. Clearly didn’t happen that way here, lol. But I understand the imperfect statement saying Winston was benched while Taysom started.

meh, semantics..., vs syntax, right? lol

If Taysom is our FT starting QB at the beginning of the season ...

The Saints are truly in trouble.

I'll let this play out at camp. Competition is always a good thing.

Precisely why we're not done yet at QB. There's no way our current third stringer makes the roster, practice squad or otherwise.

Damn, from the way he reacts to Winston, Im thinking Winston must have beat voodoo up and slept with his girlfriend on prom night!

meh, the Saints are a pretty well built team regardless of which of the two is under center. heck, I’m equally as worried about the effects of losing Kwon, Jenkins, and Brown, imho, Brown is one of the best run stopping interior linemen in the league, extremely underrated. I do feel Taysom is go go gadget guy though, and I would enjoy seeing what Winston could do start to finish in a month or two of games.

The one thing I hope doesn’t come to pass is QB by committee again, lol. I’m just not a fan of that.

Winston was never benched. Saying Winston was benched because he didn’t start is The same as saying a pitcher was relieved that never took the mound.

There is no alternate logic or gray area.

Fully understand, and agree, I said I wouldn’t make that argument of him being “benched” and explained why I wouldn’t.

Taysom did start while Winston rode the bench though.

It's not likely to disappear. Payton uses the versatility of TH7 to create personnel groupings that makes it tough for the defense to decipher especially when both Winston and TH7 are on the field at the same time. So, I would expect that seeing either and/or both in a game at the QB position will be regular business in 2021.

SFIAH

I agree with this SFIAH. This does hinge on and bring up the important question of who is QB3. The Hill package was run knowing There was another QB behind the starter (Brees) that could step in during an emergency like Winston did in the second half of the Niners game. Hill wasn’t used again in the utility role until Brees came back. So, basically Hill has to accept the utility role and another guy to backup Winston is needed. Semien is there now, maybe an upgrade can be obtained in draft or a later signing.

Re: Sean Payton: I think we’re set at quarterback

I can see us letting just the two of them battle it out in camp. My guess is it will be Winston under center next year. We'll see how he does now that he's had to work on his game and himself getting his eyes fixed and learning from the best.

I'd like to invest in a QB this draft though to learn the system and take over if Winston gets a long term deal then we've got two QB's and Taysom. Hopefully the draft pick is ready to compete next year and we have trade bait if we choose to go that direction.

Well we always knew this day would come and who will be behind center next season was always going to be distressing.
I suspect we will see both QB's in what we may call SP's WildCat Offense. The curious question is how successful will Coach Payton be without Drew Brees.

Re: Sean Payton: I think we’re set at quarterback

Winston and Hill on the field at the same time is more effective than Hill and Brees on the field together. Teams have to account for it being a shot play.
