The “Patriot” Way

They are making a big deal up here out of the idea that even though the players put out a statement saying they weren’t going to participate in the voluntaries, Newton, Sanu, and a handful of other players are showing up to put work in and get to know each other. Gotta say, I’d feel better if Winston/Hill were working out with Callaway, Humphries, et all.

It’s gonna be a slow start for a lot of teams/players. Sloppy play drops and injuries to be in the mix. The teams that start fast may not be the ones at the end making a big push. It is what it is, I’m still wondering if it’s virus related or that extra game they didn’t want. But that’s why I’m home sitting on my asre and not in a front office.

They are... I’ve seen plenty of footage of Jameis this offseason working with our WR’s and TE’s.

The vast majority of players (the rank and file) wanted the extra game because it gave them an extra paycheck. That's why the NFLPA agreed to the expanded schedule. It was favored by most of the players. It was only the highest paid minority that were against an extra game (ie. Kamara). The sitting out of voluntary activities is 100% related to COVID protocols. That said, many players have workout bonuses tied to showing up for certain voluntary activities. Those same rank and file players may make those workouts, while the highly paid few most likely won't.

That's right. Apparently it is the team facilities that the players are wanting to avoid. They don't want to deal with all of the strict protocols (daily testing, proximity monitors, etc) until they have to for mandatory activities. They will still be working out on their own in most cases.

Still would be nice if they were doing it with Coaches and staff about.

Pitch and catch is nice. No better than a school yard recess play. Say what y’all want but put a half padded defensive back in the face of that receiver and a QB stepping up to pressure from a Cam Jordan throwing it into coverage, now that’s my way of getting it down pat.

OTA's were once known as "passing camps" because the purpose was to get QB's and receivers in sync. You can still have pressures on both ends but there's not contact in those voluntary activities anyway. What you are talking about comes in the mandatory practices where the players are planning on being present when the first hints of contact occur.

Chemistry! It's called working on chemistry with team mates. I've watched Drew do this every year with his receivers on their off time to get on the same page. It's effective with or without coaches.
