Saints undrafted rookie Alex Hoffman retires to pursue medical school

After participating in the New Orleans Saints rookie minicamp this past week, undrafted rookie free agent offensive lineman Alex Hoffman has reportedly decided to retire and pursue a different career path.

According to a Helena (Montana) Independent Record report, Hoffman's retirement comes on the heels of him finding out he'd been accepted into the St. Louis University medical school.

Hoffman's retirement was initially reported by NO.Football.

A former high school quarterback who led his team a Utah state title, Hoffman blossomed into a stout offensive tackle at Carroll College, finishing his career as a three-year starter and two-time All-Conference player.

Best of luck to him. Some people will question giving up a shot at an NFL career, but the world needs good doctors more than football players.

Agreed. Remember Rhodes scholar Myron Rolle ? 6th rounder from FSU. He put his NFL career on hold and went back to medical school. Fast forward to now, he's a Neurosurgeon resident at Harvard Medical School.

Who knows, Alex could be next. I hope he does well & good for him.

Good luck to him in whatever endeavor he chooses, but sad for us, looking at his resume this was looking like a real steal. Pity, but at least we didn't waste a pick on him.

There are a couple of veterans on this line who won't mind a little less competition...

This development does not preclude him working alongside Armstead and Peat extensively in future seasons.

It would be an absolute shame if he became a doctor and the U.S. government then decided to enforce universal health care on us...

Yeah, but most doctors that I know aren't in it for the money. Although, my oncologist said that if he had to do it over again he would have gone into a different field and this was to a man who might die so I believed him. He saved my life and I just imagine what I would have done without him specifically to agree to my aggressive treatments. Probably died.
