Sean Payton: Offense will be built “a little bit” around QB choice
The Saints had a pair of quarterbacks address the media on Tuesday, which served as a reminder of the biggest storyline of their offseason.
Drew Brees retired and the team is holding a competition between Taysom Hill and Jameis Winston to replace him as their starter. The two players have very different styles that would call for different offensive mindsets, but head coach Sean Payton said on Tuesday that the core of the offense will remain the same regardless of which player is ultimately chosen to lead the team. “We’ve always tried to look closely at the strengths of our players, what they do well and we’ll build a little bit around that player accordingly,” Payton said in a press conference. “And that’s something that we did when Drew first arrived here, and we would do with either these two players. . . . there’s certain things that you might do, specific to one or the other. And yet, there’s still an overall philosophical approach that these guys will learn to play offense. But yeah, it’s not a whole different game plan for each one of them. There are certain things that we would do maybe differently with each one, but we’ll work that out.” PFT | |

Re: Sean Payton: Offense will be built “a little bit” around QB choice
Duh!
Sean Payton always schemes the players to their strengths and we need to decide who is the QB early on so Payton can go full blown mad scientist. The title was misleading and reads that the offense will be built a "little bit" around the QB. I'm calling BS. Payton builds his game around the QB and his strengths and the running game has always been an after thought. I've seen him lean heavier on the run game when Drew's arm started to decline. Drafting Kamara didn't hurt either. I've said repeatedly that we will be run heavy this year. Run to set up the pass. Maybe even a little play action. I honestly thought we had cut Murray and was so glad that I was wrong. Latavius isn't cheap but he's a great 3rd down back who can rip off some long runs. I also kept hearing that Latavius Murray was the logical choice to cut in order for us to get under the cap. Payton keeping him tells me that Payton now sees the kind of damage Murray can do. I think that pounding the ball will keep the line backers and safeties closer to the line of scrimmage. Let defenses crowd the line for the run and throw short to medium passes then we can throw the deep bomb a couple of times a game. They will have to play us totally differently and I'm sure that Payton is drawing up plays on napkins a lot these days. Heck, he can finally make use of his entire play book again. |
