Football is back! (Sorta.) Sure, it's the preseason and it technically doesn't count in the grand scheme of things, but here's your chance to get familiar with some of the new faces who are trying to crack the roster.
The Saints pay a visit to the Baltimore Ravens for this year's preseason opener. Sean Payton is planning on having players play on a pitch count of 18-22 snaps, with some position groups seeing a few more reps than that. Jameis Winston and Taysom Hill are both expected to play, but it's still a mystery regarding who will get the start in this exhibition game. When: Saturday, Aug. 14 at 6 p.m. CT. Where: M&T Bank Stadium The line: Ravens -2 1/2 Regular-season series record: Ravens lead 5-2 Last meeting: 2018: Saints 24, Ravens 23 Ravens in 2020: 11-5, 2nd in AFC North Saints in 2020: 12-4, 1st in NFC South How to watch New Orleans: WVUE / Fox 8 Baton Rouge: WAFB-TV / CBS Lafayette: KATC-TV / ABC How to listen WWL 105.3FM/870 AM (New Orleans) WDGL 98.1 FM (Baton Rouge) KMDL 97.3 FM (Lafayette) Numbers to know 17: The Ravens have won 17 straight preseason games, which is the longest streak since the Packers won 19 exhibition contests from 1959-1962. 18-22: That's how many snaps most players will be getting on Saturday, 90: That's how many players the Saints have on their roster for Saturday's game. |

Re: Saints vs. Ravens Preseason Week 1 Game Day Thread
Because this is an exhibition game, the first-string offense and defense figure to get limited minutes, if any at all, while the coaching staff focuses on evaluating the second- and third-team units against their Baltimore counterparts. That means more snaps for players near the bottom of the depth chart who are competing for jobs, particularly rookies and journeyman free agents pickup.
So here are the picks from our staff here at the Saints Wire: myself, John Sigler, plus contributors Kade Kistner and Maddy Hudak. Who is on your radar? DT #77 Jalen Dalton Hudak: The suspension of David Onyemata was perhaps the biggest blow to the team from the perspective of position depth; undrafted free agent Jalen Dalton has made this transition look somehow seamless. With several sacks, tipped passes, and strong run defense, Dalton is emerging as a strong contender to start in the interior this season. Said confidence need be tested by legitimate in-game reps. CB #29 Paulson Adebo Hudak: Paulson Adebo has garnered deserved hype with his secondary coverage throughout camp. Often off to the side going through mental reps and working on footwork, Adebo has quietly become quite dominant. He’s lined up at CB1 in second team reps and has slowly seen an increase in first team drills opposite Marshon Lattimore. I’ll be curious to see how he responds to legitimate pressure and whether the physicality displayed in camp translates to impact plays in the backfield. WR #1 Marquez Callaway Kistner: I’m excited to see Marquez Callaway get reps as what essentially should be WR1. We all know what he is capable of, but I’m hoping to see some improvement this season. I think we will see some of that in Saturday’s game. QB #15 Ian Book Kistner: Ian Book is the one I’m most curious to see get some game reps. With the quarterback situation the way it is, I think it’s a very real possibility we see Book in action this season. I’m interested to see what the Saints have in him. TE #83 Juwan Johnson Sigler: The big Oregon product spent his offseason working to convert to tight end, and those efforts paid off when the Saints agreed to try him out at another position. NewOrleans.Football’s Nick Underhill noted that Johnson recently caught four touchdown passes in two days of practice. Can he be as effective against another team’s defense? LB #50 Andrew Dowell Sigler: Craig Robertson wasn’t re-signed after the season ended, opening a spot in the special teams rotation that Dowell could fill. He’s played well enough to get a few looks with the first-string defense, but verifying that ability against Baltimore could help him win a roster spot after a few years on the practice squad. 6 players to watch in Preseason Week 1 | |

Where the Jameis Winston-Taysom Hill QB race stands before Saints' preseason opener
If you came here to find out which quarterback has “won” or “lost” the New Orleans Saints' starting job through two weeks of training camp, I’ve got bad news. Jameis Winston has arguably had the higher highs with three or four standout practice sessions. But neither he nor Taysom Hill has been jaw-droppingly good or bad -- with a total of just three interceptions apiece in 11-on-11 or 7-on-7 drills. So I took coach Sean Payton at his word when he told ESPN’s Dan Graziano on Wednesday that he wants to see two or maybe all three preseason games before reaching any conclusions. “I’d like to see these guys operate, both of them, in all three of these games,” Payton said. “Certainly by the end of the preseason games and possibly maybe before that -- a week prior to the last game [we’ll reach a decision]. But I haven’t sat down as a staff and said, ‘This is the date.’ “Hopefully it’s something we begin to see a little more clarity on. Both of these guys are working their tail off, they’re both well-respected by their teammates, they’re really, really good leaders. And that’s a good thing.” This wide-open battle certainly adds more intrigue than usual to New Orleans’ preseason opener Saturday at the Baltimore Ravens.
