If Coach Payton Pulls This Off

Just thinking it's the start of the 2021 season Drew has retired and a new era of Saints Football starts. So how in the world did we wind up with Jameis Winston as potentially our starting QB. Not so long ago the news that the Saints signed Jameis was more than a shock to most of us. Really Jameis from the Bucs the finger licking guy, the INT guy are you serious..
Well time goes by like it always does so it's starting to all sink in now. But watching him play Monday night was more than encouraging. Now the season is way early yet and lot of things are going happen.
But I guess what baffles me is how did the Coach see this early on, I guess after all he pursued Brees and we know how that all turned out.

But as an old Coach of mine always said when he was questioned.
"You see Son this is why you have the Jock and I have the Whistle"..

If Jameis goes on to have a nice career in NOLA and Brady retires in a few years, Bucs had their SB with Brady but would then lose out in the long run. That would be fun.

The only drawback to Winston winning the QB job is he will need to be re-signed after this season. Of course, if the Saints win it all- no one will care. If Winston proves his mettle though, I anticipate he would be tagged at the end of the season.

Most/all of Brees' money comes off the books after this year, so I think we will have a little more room to manage it than right now.

Calling it now. We sweep Tampa this year.

We swept them in the regular season last year and look how well that worked out for us.

Tampa defense was allowed to do "press coverage", which is basically PI. And Brees' arm is toast at the end of the season where he couldn't keep defenses honest with the, not deep, but longer throws.

It would sweet indeed if SP has another successful reclamation in Jameis. Hope springs eternal. We'll see this year. If successful how many teams in the NFL would be envious besides the Tamp Bay Bucs? How did the FailClowns feel when they gave up on Brett Favre?

Those are the spoils of the victor. Would you rather suffer through middling QBs as many teams are currently doing?

Also since Coach Payton came to New Orleans he has always had Brees behind center.
If Jameis is successful that could answer the long standing question of Sean's dependence on Drew.

Win or lose in the playoffs, it’s still better to sweep a division rival during the season than to be swept... no?

Fun fact:

Tampa Bay has won two Super Bowl titles after getting swept by a divisional foe (Saints) during the regular season ... 2002 & 2021.

The Saints also swept the Buccaneers in 2013 and 2014

Not so Fun fact for us.....Lol

I have a feeling that without Drew Sean would still have a great winning record. He's an offensive genius. Everyone who watches football knows and understands just how great he is at game planning to get the most out of every player. If he has a vision for you then you're going to be good come game day. If we had a decent defense we would probably have a Lombardi during Payton's tenure

Re: If Coach Payton Pulls This Off

I would agree that Sean is one of the more talented Offensive minds in the league today as well as a totally complete Head Coach.
I still think you can give a lot of credit to his success to Drew. Between the two are probably one of the most remarkable Coach/QB duos in NFL history.

Fair enough... by comparison, the Saints have swept Atlanta and Carolina numerous times. No SBs there! 😜

That is crazy though. Both their SBs they lost to the Saints twice?

Absolutely. Just saying, several years ago we beat Carolina and Cam Newton twice in the regular season and again in the playoffs. That was pretty sweet.

Are you saying we should intentionally lose one to them to favor the Gods?

We did split with them in 2009 when we won it all. Just sayin'.

What I will say is, the lack of deep passing ability held this Offense back. I love what Brees did for this team over the years, but the past 3 years he held us back late in the season.

Not saying any QB on this team is better, because they aren't. However, the threat of the deep pass returning just made Kamara's job slightly easier. They won't be able to stack the box or sit close on swing passes anymore.

That 2002 team was so frustrating. They sweep the eventual SB champs, including a classic on MNF and sitting at 9-4...then drop 3 straight down the stretch - including to a 1-13 Bengals team - to finish 9-7 and barely miss the playoffs. The Aaron Brooks era was wild.

Honestly, I don’t think Coach Peyton winning with Winston is a difficult thing to pull off. We’re talking about the Heisman Trophy earning, National Championship winning, 1st overall pick in the NFL Draft. He’s one of a short list of people to throw for over 5,000 yards in a season.

19,812 yards passing
121 TD’s
88 INT’s
86.9 QBR

When did all of this become something to dismiss? This guy is RIDICULOUSLY talented and we got a steal in free agency because of character concerns more than anything else if you ask me. Winston was replaced by arguably the GOAT. The question you have to ask yourself is this, when is the last time the New Orleans Saints had a #1 overall pick standing behind the center?

I said somewhere else Winston's issues are in (or were in) his head. He's as talented as any and more than most. Decision making in real time on the field. For me, is Sean as good as I think he is? We're about to find out. Winston has the tools. A golden opportunity for him and for the team.

Payton just might get the coach of the year if we have a strong season.
