Starting Guard Battle? Should Throckmorton supplant Peat/Ruiz when McCoy returns?

Since McCoy went down, we have had a lot of issues with guard and center play. Throckmorton is new to the lineup, but it seems to me like Ruiz and Peat have received as much or more criticism. So, what happens when McCoy returns? Has Throckmorton outplayed Peat and Ruiz? All else being equal he is younger, cheaper, healthier, and has good size. Do we have to start the guy with the big contract or the high pick? Or can we start the best player? Would a benching light a fire under Peat or Ruiz?

Ruiz had been looking excellent at RG. No need to bench him.

Pre mature overreaction.

CSP is already in the lab and will figure it out.

Does Reiter start at center since he was a starting center in KC and move Ruiz back to Guard

No need to really force anything at this point, we all know someone on the left side is going to get hurt soon and Throckmorton will get the opportunity to show what he can do at LG soon enough.

Won’t take to many more glaring examples of poor protection calls and just absolute loss of situational awareness and a change will come. Plenty of fault to go around but the center and left guard play looked amateur level at best.

I've tried to stay away from piling on negativity on Peat, but he was just terrible in that game, and not for the first time.

I don't know if the line would be better overall with him being replaced by Throckmorton when McCoy returns, but it certainly is something to think about.

That contract he is on was and is a headscratcher.

And he's often on the ground when a sack occurs. When you focus in on the replay of the game, Andrus Peat continues to be the weak link (Morgan Fox ate his lunch all game) on the Saints offensive line. Peat was flat-out terrible.

I'm also floored that the front office gave him such a lucrative contract.

And some want this guy as your tackle? Holy smokes .

That was the worst performance I’ve seen from the offensive line in the Payton era. I believe it was an anomaly. Year in year out we have one of the best offensive lines in the league even with injury, they will be fine. To answer your question though yes, you start the better player regardless of where they are drafted.

Re: Starting Guard Battle? Should Throckmorton supplant Peat/Ruiz when McCoy returns?

Peat graded out horribly in this game. Throckmorton didn't look much better though. No one on the O-line looked good. Against Carolina Ruiz disappointed me at center. He looked better last week in relief of McCoy. I'm hoping that Ruiz shifts back over to LG sooner rather than later. We should trade Peat to a team that needs a guard. However it's highly unlikely that a team is going to take on that albatross contract.

Clapp?

I think he is injured.

I have to wonder how much the missing assistants factored into the poor OL performance. I really don't want to comment or criticize further until I see how we play after the staff is mostly back on the sideline.

I think this had a ton to do with it. From my understanding it wasn't individual gaffs that was the root of the problems, but overall execution and scheme. That's on the coaches ... or lack there of. Adjustments were not made on Carolina's complex attack. They were constantly changing up alignments and attack points.

Maybe but does this apply to Andrus Peat as well? We've had more than a sample size with him. Not bashing on him but it seems like he affects the pocket presence/timing of both JW & Taysom.

I've seen enough games against the big boys (Chiefs, Vikings, Rams, Niners) where Peat gets abused in the trenches. That’s the conundrum of Andrus Peat. He has very high highs, but equally, terrible lows.

The current contract on Peat does not equate to the production on Sundays folks.

Sean Payton, rather emphatically, said that had nothing to do with the performance in the post-contest news conference...

Of course he did. He's going to use it to turn the heat up on the players whether warranted or not. Always a learning moment. Don't waste the opportunity. That said, it is also most likely deflecting whatever situation caused this breach to begin with. And I'm talking COVID, not offensive line breach.

I know... that was a rhetorical question. Is he really injured... you know how SP plays the game of roster shuffling and injuries designations. :bng:

Erik McCoy is probably a few weeks away from returning so, I hope the Saints elevate Austin Reiter from the PS & start him at center.

Move Ruiz back to guard.

Move Ruiz back to guard.

Sounds like a plan IF they really think he'll be an upgrade over Ruiz and/or moving Ruiz back to G will improve the line regardless of who plays center.

Move Ruiz back to guard.

Ruiz wasn't great last week but the Center position is a difficult position to play. I'm fairly certain that the Saints are better off with him there than anybody not named McCoy.

Injuries. Coaches out. Being away from home living,, training,, and traveling. Coming off an emotional,, almost perfect game against the Packers.. It was just too much.. Plus, the Panthers are legit. This week, against another tough defense, will be more of an indicator of the unit and the team as a whole. I expect a strong bounce back.

+1

Last week’s game was full of unusual obstacles to overcome. They all came crashing down on the team. Hopefully the team is healthier in both players and coaches this week. I expect a better showing.

Plus, I will be there. So they have that going for them...which is nice.
