Saints release Aldrick Rosas, agree to terms with Cody Parkey

this is a discussion within the Saints Community Forum; I too was hoping Verity would become the Saints kicker, but after looking at his college stats I am not so sure: https://www.sports-reference.com/cfb...-verity-1.html...

6 - 7 extra points. 4-5 FG attempts. Is that not consistent?

He couldn't be any worse than the Cody or the dude we just cut. You can only do so much when Tucker is getting all the reps at practice. Nonetheless, Verity is a damn good kicker & sure as hell got my attention in the preseason and also against playing us (53 yarder). Pre-season is for evaluation right?

The Saints aren't good enough to get by right now. We need all of the points we can get.

Isn't Parkey the guy who played for the Browns in 2018 and could have beat us, had he not missed 3 or 4 FG's?

I'd rather Taysom kick if so -_-

In preseason against backup special teamers ... nothing there to get excited about. He kicked a 53 yard meaningless FG against us in preseason. Once again, if he was all that then why hasn't any of the other 31 teams picked him up off the PS?

As Matthew pointed out, Verity was only 14-21 in FG attempts his senior year at East Carolina. 74-98 his entire career. He was no more than average at a small school.

What's the hype?

Doesn't matter now we got Perky Parkey kicking for us until Lutz gets back. Rosas just wasn't getting it done so on we go.

Re: Saints release Aldrick Rosas, agree to terms with Cody Parkey

One more note on the PK Verity. I remember hearing the former Bucs GM, Mark Dominik, talking about the importance of maintaining good relations with fellow GM's around the league. It had to do with snatching players either while being released for an in season move to the practice squad or signing off of the practice squad. While it is well within the rules it could hamper future dealings with the other team's management. He said something about weighing the benefits against the clear drawback.

That got me thinking about the situation with Verity. Practice squad players hold more value to a team than does a free agent, of course. They likely have a greater value to most other teams, as well. This coupled with a rule that requires paying three weeks of the players salary if claimed off of another team's practice squad, regardless of whether they remain on the acquiring team's roster for less time than that or not, could be problematic. This would render a practice squad player a poor candidate for a very short term active roster pickup. First off you would be burning a minimum of three times the rookie base salary for a single week's usage against your cap. Secondly, you can be assured that any move to demote the player to your own practice squad to get future value would fail as they would surely be snatched back up by some other club via waivers for their own practice squad.

Would this be worth the cost of the move and the possibility of pissing off a fellow GM in addition? I feel this type of move might be worth it for a player that is likely to remain on the acquiring team's roster for an extended period, but a free agent would be more logical for short term usage with only a game to game obligation in regards to both cap and business relations.
