Sean Payton's true genius

It isn't the playcalling
It isn't being an offensive savant
It isn't being a QB guru
It isn't the 5-2 record

(though those things help)

It's inspiring a man on crutches to dance for you.
It's having an assistant coach run down the sideline and give you a noogie after a huge play.
It's tweaking the Superdome fans that they aren't being loud enough.

It's being more considerate and transparent to the press and admirably filling
the void after your undisputed hall of fame captain QB retires
It's finding a middle ground with Michael Thomas, when in the past you would have burned the bridge
It's moving on from Bountygate, the Minnesota Miracle and the Rams PI non-call and turning those disappointments into fuel for your team

It's standing your ground and earning loyalty from the players you saw something in (Kamara, Davenport, Deonte Harris) when few others did

Very few NFL teams - possibly no other teams - have the level of culture and buy-in Payton has manifested.

That is true growth, and genius.

He definitely knows how to get buy-in. The thing I’ve noticed about him these last several years is his emphasis on continuity. That’s really paying off. Keeping people in this system and allowing them to grow has had a positive effect. Even people that we thought were garbage like PJ Williams are making positive contributions. His play calling is sketch at times, but he one hell of a coach.

Even if he gets cute with his play calling, and fails with some of those cute play calls, it does make it more fun to watch. It bites us in the arse at times, like the last game. Still, out of all the coaches in the league right now, whom would rather have besides BB?

Re: Sean Payton's true genius

What amazes me is he has coached some very bad Saints teams and never done worse than 7-9.

Re: Sean Payton's true genius

He sent me an autographed copy of his book "Home Team" when I missed him in training camp the year I came back from cancer. I left a short letter thanking him for giving me a reason to walk down to the TV room on Sundays with family and friends to watch the saints play. The autographed signature was addressed to "The Twin Team" It doesn't get any better than that.

Oh yeah, he's also a good head coach.
