I haven’t known many kickers (if any) other kickers to wear that number.

I have been meaning to ask that question since he was signed, since I wear my Dempsey jersey regularly for games.
I think he's pretty much always worn #2 in the NFL. My guess is that #19 was the only number available with the Saints. Jameis Winston already had Maher's #2.

So, it sounds like Guido has no idea. I don’t either exiled but it’s a good question.

Did some more checking. Exactly as I suspected. Kickers are required to wear a number between 1-19. Every number was in use on the Saints roster other than 8, 9, and 19 when Maher was added. He was given the number 19.

"After rookie kicker Brian Johnson missed the last three point-after tries through the last two games, the New Orleans Saints brought back kicker Brett Maher, signing the former Dallas Cowboys specialist to the practice squad on Wednesday.

As of Wednesday, Johnson remains with the team.

Maher, for now, is wearing No. 19 — one of the only numbers the Saints have available for a backup specialist. He wore No. 6 — the number Johnson is currently wearing — during his brief stint in New Orleans earlier this year."

It is nothing more than a coincidence that it was Dempsey's number.
