Re: The New "Pay-Loo"

I think Sean Payton is a talented coach. I don’t think Loomis is anything special. Being a wizard about the cap relative to you and me does not make him anything special. Every college has a dozen math PhDs who I think could figure out how to sign a player to an extension that converts their salary to a prorated signing bonus while adding voidable years at the end, its not some big secret like the sauce on a big mac. I dont think Loomis has a unique talent with the cap, I think he has a unique appetite for being the king of debt. Debt in itself can be strategic at times, to take a team to the next level when its on the cusp, but when it takes debt to even stay on the cusp its time to rebuild, and I am not sure he can see that. The other risk to his strategy is that it can require doubling down on questionable contracts, because when debt leverage is maxxed you cant afford to take the hit of cutting a bad contract and eating dead money on the cap, so you have to do the opposite and extend and guarantee that bad contract money into the future. There are no such thing as cap wizards. Loomis is just a guy who has no wanted to consider rebuilding. Then again with the Pelicans he traded for all kinds of future picks so who knows. Cant judge the results of that though because the deck is stacked against small markets in the nba and that was a pure bet against the lakers stars health that could still hit if they have a golden state injury streak.
