Dennis Allen, Raiders coach, won't call defensive plays

Allen has a difficult task with this Raiders team. He's changing schemes dramatically on both sides of the ball without the benefit of many new players.

In that situation, most coaches would try to do everything to make their imprint on the squad by calling plays. By controlling everything possible. Allen won't go that route.

Defensive coordinator Jason Tarver will call the defense. Offensive coordinator Greg Knapp will call the offense.

Also note that the Saints defense went to hell in a handbasket in 2012 when DA left.

Allen was under .300 because he had no players in place to run his defense. He has nothing but his players in place here in New Orleans. Incredibly huge difference.

IDK Oak. Let’s give the guy a try. Plenty of guys did better in their second stint as a coach. D and special teams should still be strengths. Hopefully Oline is healthy and Thomas goes back to playing like he did three years ago. Maybe they will go get an outside big name OC that can attract a QB and other players.

The Kamara situation really hurts. Now the team has to look at adding backfield talent as much as, if not more so, than WR. That’s why I mentioned Phillips Lindsay in a different thread. He reminds me a bit of a poor man’s Pierre Thomas.

But without Brady, Tampa will likely suck. The division is still ours for the taking. Unless Tampa goes out and gets Rodgers or Wilson or Murray to replace Brady. That would suck.

One thing to note is that the Rooney Rule now applies to Coordinator hires, as well. If Marrone has been officially hired it couldn't be for the OC position without the proper procedures being completed.

Do you happen to know if interviews for Head Coach go towards satisfying the Rooney Rule for coordinators, specifically can the Saints claim they discussed both HC and OC with Eric B, or does another separate round of interviews need to take place?

I've been searching for that and have a question out to Kat Terrell about that very thing, Matthew. I have a feeling that the team must log a position specific interview request with the league, but not sure.

We are living another exciting off season with all the changes going on. It looks like the club is still headed in the right direction. No. I don't believe that the sky is falling again. We have too much talent coaching, playing, and in the front office. I'm excited about the opportunities ahead for the team and fans.

I'm still hoping we find a way to bring Eric Bieniemy in. If it takes money or an elevated title but having him focused on the offense would be tremendous AND mean great things for us at QB.... whoever that may be.

I get your frustration but it’s not just SF, several long time members are frustrated and theres a common denominator at the source. Getting rid of him or suspending him would end it all. It makes more sense than ignoring several members.

I came across something the other day that implied he stepped down as OC, unfortunately I cannot remember where I found that at. If true, that is a very interesting twist. I do believe what you are saying has merit, he could very well be positioning himself to join Payton.

Well, fortunately this is an exciting off season with lots of subjects to log onto the BNG for updates each day. It's a slow time of year and I go there too for info but can't stay long because there is such discourse over there. Name calling to me sounds kind of childish.

Isnt the logical thing to speculate that Carmichael has some kind of health or personal issue? It doesnt make sense to turn down a head coaching interview and ask for a demotion because of some grand plan to get the same job he had for 15 years Paytons OC in another city maybe if Payton doesnt end up liking broadcasting or have the current coaches at his ideal landing spots do well and not get fired. If Carmichael takes the interview for head coach maybe he gets hired. Its unpredictable. Allen could have had contract issues or taken another job. Carmichaels interview with the Saints could have led to other interviews and a surprise hire in Houston. Staying as OC and having a head coach interview or two this year, Carmichael could have been a prime candidate for a head coaching gig next year, or parlayed other head coaching interviews into a coordinator gig on a better offense. Turning down interviews and asking for a demotion tells me Carmichaels big ambitions are over and he is winding things down, not that this is all part of the plan to become the next Kellen Moore maybe in a few years.

He might be being promoted to associate head coach overseeing the offense. Or maybe he is suffering from a rare form of stress induced phobia that's triggered by defensive minded head coaches? Who knows? Saintsfan1976 put it perfectly ... speculation overload. :D

Maybe Carmichael gets a similar position as this except Senior Offensive Assistant or such. All they have said is he's staying with the Saints in a position other than OC.

I think Payton has a plan and was pretty transparent about it with Loomis, Mrs Benson and certain people close to him. There may be a handshake deal in place between him and Payton.

Pete Carmichael is good. I'm glad that he's staying at home in some capacity. He knows X's & O's and understands Payton's innovative complex system. I honestly believe that he wants to be the power behind the throne and doesn't care about being center stage.

If he did not like him he could take the head coach interview, and then if passed over ask to be released, and go elsewhere. Thats common when one coordinator gets the head gig the other asks to move on, its respected. He could prove elsewhere that he is good without Payton. I just think refusing an interview and asking for a demotion is a weird strategy for anything. If he wants to go back to being Paytons OC how does asking for a demotion help? And what kind of plan is that having no idea where Payton will end up or whether Payton will love broadcasting or whether the jobs Payton wants will come open?
