What’s Left At QB
After the dust settled from the weekend what options do we have left. Many of you have more insight into what’s going on locally than I do. As I look around, excluding what we currently have on our roster, I see draft someone, J. Winston, B. Mayfield, G. Minshew, And M. Ryan as possibilities. Not even sure if these guys would come to New Orleans, but all things being equal who would be the best fit. My guess is Atlanta would never trade us Ryan and Mayfield has never mentioned us nor have we showed any interest in him from what I’ve seen. That leaves Winston and Minshew. Any thoughts from you guys and did I miss someone?

Re: What’s Left At QB
I don't get the Minshew love. Winston has far more upside from what I have seen. Ryan wants a new deal with Atlanta and Atlanta wouldn't trade in division anyway. With Payton gone I don't see interest in Mayfield. I think it'll be Winston.

My bet is on Winston. Tremendous upside and if he is our starter this year I hope they take the shackles off. |
Re: What’s Left At QB
Well, the issue with Winston is he has not signed. Either he really doesn't want to come back to the Saints, or the Saints offer was very low. Out of what is left out there, Minshew is a big upgrade over both Blake Bortles and Ian Book, and would be in interesting battle straight up against Hill.

Re: What’s Left At QB
Well With so many picks already and the inconsistent play of hurts I’m not sure Philly has any need or desire to trade Minshew. Not sure which of the two I would prefer but it’s looking more like Winston will be under center for at least this year, unless he’s sour about the Watson deal. Hopefully he’s will be a professional about it but who knows with these athletes nowadays.

Hasn't torn an ACL. Minshew is likely to be cheaper. We may not get Winston and even if we do, I can argue Minshew would be a better backup than anyone on our roster. |

Re: What’s Left At QB
Offering the Ravens something for Tyler Huntley could be an option. It might take a 2nd round pick. He started strong and struggled in his last two starts, but those last two starts were against Aaron Donald and TJ Watt, and he is young with upside.
Depending on what the Lions do, Jared Goff could end up cut and available for pennies. I think Jared Goff is better than Gardner Minshew. Jimmy Garappalo is likely available for trade, but I don't like the idea of trading picks, paying 20 million, and dealing with his injury history, all for I think 10% better than Jared Goff, who might be available with none of those issues, or Gardner Minshew who might just be a younger Jimmy Garoppolo. If other teams think this way too though, there is a chance nobody bites on Alex Smith 2.0 and he gets cut and is available cheap, in which case why not. Jordan Love is likely available cheap for trade, but looked bad in very limited game action, and the Packers have been hesitant to create any buzz around him. If we go with Taysom, who will likely get injured in the first few games, or don't acquire another QB, Love could be worth a mid round pick just to see what happens. |

Re: What’s Left At QB
Well I would ride with Winston or Minshew but have no interest in any of the other quarterbacks mentioned in thread including Jimmy G. Not a great year in the draft either. Maybe you roll Bortles out there and give him a second shot in the NFL. LoL. I’m at a loss with the QB situation in the NFL right now. I can’t remember a time when the position was so top heavy on talent.

Re: What’s Left At QB
If it was a vote, mine would be for Winston but it's concerning that it hasn't happened yet. I think I saw we made him an offer that wasn't accepted. People are concerned that he might be offended by our courtship of Watson, but it doesn't look like he's that hot to come back. None of the others impress me.

We've been dreading the QB transition for a few years now. We're here now... and there will be a few bumps along there way. We were 9-8 last year with a turnstile at QB. We can be the same with a rookie QB if need be, even if it is Ian Book or a new draftee. That's better than most other teams can claim. |

I'm warming up to the idea of Gardner Minshew. I've been watching his film ever since I saw somebody post his stats in the forum. I was impressed by his numbers, and I like what I'm seeing on the tape. Not to mention, he went to Brandon High School in Mississippi. I like it.

Wasn’t Dougie Marrone the HC for Jacksonville while Gardner was there?
Surely he has given the Saints brass some input. Make the call to Philly. |

Re: What’s Left At QB
It seems like there are quite a few guys that are in still early stages of their careers that are looking for second (or third) chances with another team. I think many of them could succeed given the right chances. Just like Brees thrived and Stafford won a SB with a second team, Mayfield, Trubiski, Winston, Minshew, Love, and others have enough talent to win with enough help. They are all young enough to improve. Just my feeling.
I realize these guys are not all available or course. Just thinking out loud. |
