He's played 36 games in 3 seasons.

Maybe he's due. Maybe he's just a really good blocker who makes 2-3 catches per game.

Cole Beasley
Emmanuel Sanders
Odell Beckham, Jr.
Desean Jackson

All better options.

I think he'll have more impact in the 4 hole than drawing the 1st or 2nd coverage like he has the last two years. The same with Callaway. When we pair up another impact WR with Thomas both Callaway and Smith should have more chance to beat their man. Of course, being healthy will have a positive impact, as well.

All still available. We'll have six WR's on the roster, at least, right?

Agreed. I saw enough of TreQuan last season.

Very disappointing. I know there is still a lot of time, and a deep draft coming up...

Wasted roster spot. You UPGRADE in the off season at a position of need.
4 seasons later he does nothing to move the needle.

Coach Dennis Allen is gonna have to learn the hard way.

Insanity …

Perhaps also kick the tires on TY Hilton.

Agreed. However, the available FA options are way more $. TreQuan, FWIW, knows the offense. Maybe he thrives better with MT back. And should we draft Christian Watson and another speedy WR, we might be OK, provided that is if we also draft an OT AND a G .

Probably. I wouldn’t have wasted one of those spots on TreQuan though.

In the WR room we have MT, Callaway (hopefully won't fallaway), Little Jordan, Deonte Harris, now TreQuan.
We'll need Christian Watson AND another speedy WR. Signing TreQuan makes me think we'll only draft one WR now, hopefully the Randy Moss-esque Watson.

Blocking is something this team values, and separation makes it harder to block.

Speedo (aka Larry the fanboy) likes blocking too.

Is the twitter handle @cantshedtrequan taken?

SaintGnome 03-28-2022 06:18 PM

Re: TreQuan is Back!

I think Trequan is more of tight end than receiver. He's the reverse Jimmy G who was more receiver than TE. He isn't costing that much, so I don't see what the big deal is bringing him home.

I think 3Quan played very well for us down the stretch last season. He made some big catches in some very important games.
But that what he does. He’ll have a good streak of games, then play terrible or disappears.

I know he hasn't been a consistent WR, but I have to say when he does catch the ball in open space...he's damn fun to watch. Who knows maybe he finally reaches his potential this year and again he's not that expensive...

Re: TreQuan is Back!

I’m not excited about it by any means. But they do have 90 players in camp. Like mentioned earlier by Gnome He’s a guy who knows the system. Could be nothing more than a training camp guy to give the QBs a qualified route runner until the season starts; Could end up stepping his game up and being a solid #4 behind Thomas, Callaway, and someone yet on the roster.

I know some people are not happy with this re-signing, but it's not a huge contract, so at least they didn't break the bank on him.

When you have undrafted guys (Callaway & Deonte) outperforming you in production, health, & they “block”, that says something about a player. That $2 million looks like nothing, but it’s something that could’ve went to pay someone else that does more than “block”.

I think people are really missing this (production/lack thereof) for whatever reason.

Re: TreQuan is Back!

(Can’t believe I’m defending Smith!). Keep in mind a few things;
He had Brees throwing to him in his weak arm phase
Had camps and preseasons impacted by COVID, hurricanes, QB battles
Had Winston for 6 1/2 games and then a revolving door at QB
Had no strong WR or TE presence to help him a good chunk of the time

All excuses?…maybe so. But they all had an impact on his development. I’ll admit I’m down on him and this signing is not what I was hoping for. But it’s a long way until final cuts and if he’s our 5th receiver on the team then we could do worse.

Re: TreQuan is Back!

I'm fine with this. It's 2 million guaranteed and he knows the system. If he's our 4 or 5 receiver, it's fine. His supposed skill set works with Jameis arm strength. If we wanted to sign a bigger name, this deal won't prevent us from doing so.

Boston Saint 03-29-2022 09:00 AM

Re: TreQuan is Back!

Here are some interesting stats I found quickly:

Smith was 85th amongst all NFL wide receivers last year in both yards and catches at 32 for 377 yards. With 31 other NFL teams considered that means there were fewer than 3 WRs per team that had better stats than him.

In other words, on average, his numbers would have been slightly better than the#3 guy on other team’s rosters. So, with CGM back (🤞) and Callaway living up to (and hopefully bettering) his performance from last year and whoever they draft (again🤞), then by numbers Trequan should be a solid 4th receiver. Just food for thought. I guess I’m trying to convince myself it’s not a bad signing after all.

Re: TreQuan is Back!

The problem with 3Quan is his route running. He doesn't run crisp routes. Instead of sticking his foot in the ground and making sharp cuts he round the routes off which throws off timing and allows DB's to jump routes. He's pretty good in the red zone though. I just would rather try and develop other talents. I much rather continue to watch Lil'Jordan Humphrey grow as a WR.

Agreed. I’ve wanted to see more of Humphries for a while Rez. He still could beat out Smith in camp.

Has he played a full injury free season yet?

Didn't think so. Let's see if this actually happens this year. Maybe his numbers improve then.
