Saints select Northern Iowa LT Trevor Penning with the No. 19 pick in the draft
 

The New Orleans Saints had been connected to Northern Iowa offensive tackle Trevor Penning for much of the pre-draft process, and Thursday they made those projections a reality.

New Orleans used the second of its two first-round picks on Penning, a 6-foot-7, 325-pound tackle who should give the team a long-term replacement for Terron Armstead, who signed with the Miami Dolphins in free agency this offseason.

Penning, who turns 23 next month, was a three year starter for Northern Iowa. He was a first-team All-Missouri Valley Conference performer as a senior, and is one of the most athletic offensive tackles in the 2022 draft class.

In case you missed it post draft, Dennis Allen stated that Ramz will stay at RT.

The plan for Penning is at LT but of course he’ll have to compete for the starting role.

Sweet! That'll save the Saints cap not having to pay Ramczyk for any left tackle incentives. That alone is incentive to keep him at RT.

So you are doing away with Left Tackle or just not going to incentivize the position?

Positions are incentivized, it is the only way to maintain consistent effort on the 0-line.

Trent Brown or similar players might be the only exception as they are incentivized to lose weight lol.

I was kind of surprised that Penning was still on the board.

Nothing wrong with having a Big Nasty on the offensive line. It'll be interesting to see if he gets in the heads of defensive players like Ceedy does with offensive players. Lol.

Agreed. I guess they just want to keep some level of continuity on the line. Penning has that Richie Incognito in him and I like that. You hit Winston late? You might get your ass suplexed. We just gotta make sure he doesn't commit too many holding or unnecessary roughness penalties. I'm super excited about both of these picks though.

That is the absolute right move. Big Ram is no slouch when it comes to moving people and having him and McCoy Flanking Ruiz might get the right side working if people just stays healthy this coming season.
Also he doesn't have to spend a ton of time getting comfortable on the other side of the line, its a process that takes a little time and quite some reps.

I like the pick, him and Ram are hopefully going to be awesome bookends on the O-line.

I hope he can stay healthy and learn on the field early - the Saints have had some bad luck in that department with McCoy and Ruiz.

Ramczyk has special incentives written into his contract for time spent specifically at the left tackle position. This is to what I was referring. Keeping him at RT saves the team future cap space. I never said a word about doing away with the position or doing away with any incentives. I'm not sure where you got that idea.

Read that back to your self, a few times. Then go look up where Ram was playing when he made All Pro for three years. Now look up NLTBE in regards to NFL incentivization and cap hit.


After you have done all that and realize that there is no relief because that was never a cap hit. Next consider the fact that whom ever is in that spot might just f***ing get some incentivization built into his contract. :bng:

He had written into his contract extra compensation that would result in cap hit IF and only IF he earned honors at LEFT TACKLE.

NLTBE incentives still count against the cap, just not in the year earned. Thus the ALL FUTURE SEASONS. He doesn't have the same incentives for RT, therefore, exactly as I stated it saves future potential cap hits from Ramczyk as relates to left tackle.

1. NLTBE - Does not hit the cap in the present season and does not hit the cap in the following season, or any season, if not earned.

2. ALL of Ramz Pro Bowls were at RT and not LT which means his LT incentive is categorized as NLTBE. (Read number 1 again)

3. Making the Pro-Bowl at RT is NOT an indicator of being able to make it at LT. If you think it is, you dont know sh1t about the O-line.(Read number 2 again)

The above is just to kill your BS analysis, the below salts the earth.

LT will be incentivized for the player that starts making all of your claims meaningless with no cap hit for LT avoided.

The problem is not that you do not understand the cap rules because you clearly do, the problem is that you make things up then use them as the foundation of your argument. :bng:

What I really like is the overall versatility. I believe Penning has played both tackle and both guard spots in college. We already know Ramczyk can be moved around too if needed, Hurst can be moved around, and even Peat can be toggled between LG and LT if needed. The projected starting lineup is likely Penning/Peat/McCoy/Ruiz/Ramzyk, but if that doesn't exactly work out to plan the Saints should be able to shuffle a great front line together. Let's just hope we don't have to witness the injury problems of the past.
