The more offers we consider the more we can raise the price. An extra bidder will never make the price lower. Looks what the Browns got in return for the pleasure of paying an oft injured immature qb facing a suspension and coming back from a long break out of action a record contract by dealing him within the conference in a bidding war.
I don’t know what I expect of Payton. Parcells with the Jets or Cowboys? Shannahan with the Redskins. Vermeil with the Chiefs. Ditka with the Saints. Bill Walsh with Stanford. Mike Holmgren with the Seahawks. Vince Lombardi with the Redskins. George Seifert with the Panthers. Jimmy Johnson with the Dolphins. When you look at all the comps there are a lot of ways that trading for a super bowl winning coach can go wrong and no precedent for an absolute home run just ok or disaster. The fact is that if we traded Payton to the Falcons for three 1st round picks and more, it would be a much bigger risk for the Falcons than for us, and likely something we could hold over them for a generation. Its very hard to start at the bottom with a new team and new QB and climb that mountain again when you dont have the motivation of proving it for the first time or the team that has already done it. Sean Payton would have to be the Phil Jackson of the NFL, except he is about 5 rings with the first team short of that precedent. By that precedent, I could see the Patriots not trading Bill Belichick to the Bills, because the Belichick does have all those rings and the Bills do have Shaq and Kobe level potential stars to win him more. But then again Vince Lombardi did nothing with his next team, so maybe if Belicheck retired, the Patriots would be smart to trade him to the Bills.
