They brought this up yesterday on NFL Radio. They said it would take eight #1's for an interdivisional team to get his rights ... in other words, there's no way that would ever happen.

Re: Another team inquires about SP
How many coaches have won a superbowl with one team and then gone on to win it all again with another. I am pretty sure it is none ever. Based on that statistic, if a team within the division wanted to give us three 1st round picks for the right to Payton, I think we should look at it. Payton is a great coach but what if a division rival gave us 3 1st rounders and more, and what they got was a Mike Shannahan Redskins type tenure? It would be an amazing win.

I don’t know what I expect of Payton. Parcells with the Jets or Cowboys? Shannahan with the Redskins. Vermeil with the Chiefs. Ditka with the Saints. Bill Walsh with Stanford. Mike Holmgren with the Seahawks. Vince Lombardi with the Redskins. George Seifert with the Panthers. Jimmy Johnson with the Dolphins. When you look at all the comps there are a lot of ways that trading for a super bowl winning coach can go wrong and no precedent for an absolute home run just ok or disaster. The fact is that if we traded Payton to the Falcons for three 1st round picks and more, it would be a much bigger risk for the Falcons than for us, and likely something we could hold over them for a generation. Its very hard to start at the bottom with a new team and new QB and climb that mountain again when you dont have the motivation of proving it for the first time or the team that has already done it. Sean Payton would have to be the Phil Jackson of the NFL, except he is about 5 rings with the first team short of that precedent. By that precedent, I could see the Patriots not trading Bill Belichick to the Bills, because the Belichick does have all those rings and the Bills do have Shaq and Kobe level potential stars to win him more. But then again Vince Lombardi did nothing with his next team, so maybe if Belicheck retired, the Patriots would be smart to trade him to the Bills. |

Sean would be nuts (or a masochist) to take the Panties job. Why on earth would he want to go to a total rebuild? He would have been better off staying with us.

Re: Another team inquires about SP
I agree its one of the worst jobs in the league. They are second only to the Saints in money over the 2023 cap. They have a worse roster. The only way the job should interest Sean is if they get the 1st overall draft pick and some college QB has an amazing season and looks like a future hall of famer. But that could totally happen that the Panthers or Falcons could get the #1 overall pick and tempt Payton with a once in a lifetime QB prospect. It can't happen for us because we traded our 1st rounder so if our season goes off the rails with injury and bad luck, the Eagles could land Sean.
