I closely watched Ellis in the preseason, even rewinding and pausing the play to see things like positioning, getting off blocks, is his head still watching the backfield, etc. Ellis was rarely near the ball with a chance to make a play. He did not seem to understand where the ball was going, or how to work in lanes to get to a runner. In pass coverage he seemed lost, as well. I tried to find some stats to back up what I'm writing. I couldn't find snap counts for this preseason. In three games played, where I thought it seemed Ellis played at least most of the first half each week, he had a total of 3 tackles. By comparison, Jon Bostic, who only played in two games, had 11 tackles. Bostic came into camp late and Ellis has been on the team for a few years. Eric Wilson had 11 tackles in his preseason snaps. Chase Hansen played in two games and had 8 tackles and an interception. |
