1) The Saints' trade of Chauncey Gardner-Johnson to the Eagles made no sense. The 2019 fourth-rounder is headed into the final season of his rookie deal, and a few team-friendly explanations suggested New Orleans wanted to get something for Gardner-Johnson now, given that he wasn't going to be a priority in free agency next year -- but that explanation doesn't hold water. The Saints essentially received nothing in return: a 2023 fifth- and 2024 sixth-round pick in exchange for one of the league's best hybrid slot players and a 2025 seventh-rounder.

One season of "Ceedy Deuce" should be worth way more than that, and his production would have likely yielded the Saints a third-round compensatory pick if they'd been patient enough to wait for him to sign elsewhere in free agency next offseason. It was a salary dump before they even had to pay Gardner-Johnson his big salary. Per NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport, "he really reacted to not getting the contract that he wanted" in extension talks with the team, but there have been no indications otherwise he was going to skip work or be a problem. Even the reports defending the Saints' position painted the decision as business, not personal. (The Saints, for what it's worth, also have a ton of cap space this season, having cleared room ahead of their failed pursuit of Deshaun Watson.)

It's clear the Saints feel great about their secondary depth. I do, too! But it's still puzzling that they gave away one of the league's best young players at his position. To put it another way: If Gardner-Johnson had been available in a trade in February, he would have been worth a second- or third-round pick at worst.

All good points. Yet I can’t believe that the FO didn’t do their due diligence and look for the best deal. There has to be a reason the other 31 teams didn’t want him enough to offer more than what Philly did. I’m guessing there is something going on we don’t know. Allen coached him for all his seasons in the league…there must be a reason he didn’t want him around. We will see.

If nothing else he would give some info on the saints O. Glad we don’t play them until the end of the season.

Turbo does make (many) good points, especially what he would have been worth in trade in February.

That’s a good question. Pre-draft makes a difference. If he was set on 12 Mill a year though and other teams knew that before trading for him, then that may have driven his trade price down. Not likely down to what the eagles payed though.

I was thinking the same thing. Nothing else makes sense.
I’d literally be happy with ANYONE at WR other than Trequan.
Heck let Trautman and J. Johnson get the snaps 3Quan would get. Blocking is all Smith does well anyway, they can do that.

Completely misses the culture issue. Ceedy was doing his own version of quiet quitting by not participating and not taking coaching direction. No matter the pick, it makes no sense to expose the locker room to an entire year of what clearly heading into the direction of antics for not getting his deal. Yes the Saints may have gotten better compensation. But at the expense of having the disruption and distraction of a disgruntled player for an entire season.

This is called a ‘Hold In’ and is a new twist on a ‘Hold Out’ that avoids fines. Many many players did it for some period during the offseason. All the other teams waited them out. CGJ is a competitor and if he lost playing time due to it he would cut it out. We are the only team that freaked out. Next we will trade Penning for a 5th. He already got in a camp fight so all he has to do is ask for a raise and be pissy for a bit in offseason like players on every team do and we will freak and bail.

Completely missed him calling out coaches when had a minor injury, saying got you want you don’t have to pay me. Then a tweet calling out DA about a comment that DA made during post practice interview that CJ had an issue with cramps. Additionally he was not responding to coaches during practice.

The Saints didn’t freak they made the decision it was best to remove the obvious distraction. We as fans have very limited view into the day to day dynamic that goes on.

I don’t think this move was ideal, liked CJ but this decision was made by those who had seen and heard enough and felt the team had the talent to move forward without CJ.

Not hard to see the drive and swagger he had on the field carry over into how he possibly approach this impasse with the Saints. PROVOCATEUR Extraordinaire.

Do wish CJ the best except when we play Philly but hope they beatup the Cowgirls twice this season.
