this is a discussion within the Saints Community Forum; The kindest thing I can say is the refs are seeing things that are clearly not there....

Re: Buccaneers @ Saints Game Day Thread
I think there is an argument the refs and Goodell are so strongly against us that we can't afford to build a franchise in a traditional way. There is too much parity in the NFL to get to and win the Superbowl while managing the salary cap year to year and playing against the refs too. What we might need to do is acquire the sort of stars that Goodell needs to market the NFL and also instead of managing the salary cap year to year, get way under the cap and then spend it all in 1-2 years. Goodell can prevent us from ever winning a Super Bowl now. Say its a conspiracy, say I have a tin hat, but the facts bear it out from the no call to last week to today.
Here would be my plan to overcome Goodell, as he is more determined than ever this year to sabotage us. Trade all our assets. Dump salary cap. Acquire draft picks. Effectively tank. Put ourselves in a position to draft a player like Arch Manning a few years down the road. While we get in that position get way under the salary cap and roll over our surpluses. If we acquire a young prime high profile star like Arch Manning, either through our own tanked draft picks or through draft picks we acquire in trade, Roger Goodell may be unable to tilt the refs against us, because he may need that player to succeed to market the NFL and drive ratings. Then as that player enters prime years, unload all the spent salary cap on acquiring more stars to surround them. Focus on stars not just with good skills but also who are very marketable and hard for the NFL to throw under the bus with refs. Cap timing, using saved up cap when you have a young QB on a rookie deal, is the way around parity in the NFL, even if it can't build decade long dynasties. Goodell can afford to ruin Winston's career with refs throwing the monetum against him. He can't afford to ruin the career of an Arch Manning type QB where he will get a call from State Farm and Nike. I wish we could build a long term winner and get rings like Belichick and Brady, but I don't think they would have won any Superbowls with the ref treatment we are getting. |

Say we had drafted Maholmes but the refs are still against us. Maholmes still makes some amazing throws and plays in high scoring games and racks up big stats. He is still young and likable. State Farm and Dominos Pizza and Nike sign him to endorsements. Then when the NFL doesn't give him star treatment and calls back all his big plays, Goodell gets calls from State Farm, Dominos, and Nike. I think that makes a real difference. I don't think we can afford to be a gritty veteran lunch pail team full of second chances. We can only beat Goodell if we hit him in the pocket book or if we have such an amazing team that few games are close (only possible if we get under the cap and then load up all at once). |

Why is PJ Williams 1 on 1 with a WR man? Sometimes I don’t know what the **** DA is thinking.
