New Orleans Saints Coach Dennis Allen, players talk about loss to Tampa Bay Buccaneers | 2022 NFL Week 2
New Orleans Saints Coach Dennis Allen:
On Marshon Lattimore being disqualified: "He (Mike Evans) was the first one to push and shove Lattimore, but I've been around this league long enough; usually they don't get the instigator, they usually get the responder. I think what happened after that was a little bit excessive so we will see how that goes." On his thoughts if Jameis Winston's back was bothering him and affecting his play: "No I didn't really see that, necessarily. Again, that is probably a question for him a little bit more. That is a good defense that we played. They do a pretty good job in terms of their rush coverage and some of their pressure packages, so we will get back and look at the tape and see where we can improve. There are a couple of throws we missed that he typically wouldn't. We will have to evaluate the tape and see." On his plan for Jameis before the game if there was any question of him not being able to play: "No, he was going." On late third quarter fumble: "That was a game-changer I think the ball was on 10-yard line at that point in time and we were in a good position with how we were playing defense that if we were able to put some points on the board; I think there was a minute to go in the third quarter when that happened so I thought that was a momentum changer in the game." On if the disqualification was the factor of the momentum change: "I don't think that was a factor. I mean we lost momentum and we lost momentum because we turned the ball over. I don't think that was the factor." On the decision to not kick a field goal before the half: "Look, we knew this was going to be a field position game, which it was. Unfortunately, we played the game on our end of the field a little bit too much the first half, but it was a three to nothing game at that point in time and I didn't feel like taking an opportunity on a long field goal at that point in the game was the right thing to do." That's not saying the loss can be penned on Ingram solely, but that's the play that made the most obvious impact in person. |

Winston's back is a huge issue. What would you be doing if you had 4 fractures of your vertebrae? It affects his mobility in the pocket which is why he is being sacked.

They can also get local pain killing injections which will last for several hours. |

I would assume what Winston is dealing with is not affecting the spinal cord itself and is simply fractures to the bones themselves and not affecting the spinal cord. If it was a spinal issue like yours there's no way they'd allow him to play. Fractures would just be localized pain. That's what I have basically, except mine are bone spurs in the facet joints from arthritis. Hairline fractures, like spurs, wouldn't affect the mobility of my arms and hands which are associated with C-4 - C-7 beyond the pain of the local area. Killing that pain eliminates all of my issues with mobility. I would assume the same goes for the lumbar region as long as no spinal issues are involved. |

And, yes, inflammation could be affecting the nerves I suppose. I know an ESI would help that a lot, but I'm not sure if that is allowed since it is steroid based. Sounds like what he may have are fractures to the tips of the facets. I know that can happen from impact. Can't remember the QB that had that a few years back, but it doesn't affect the nerves at all. Just pain tolerance. And, like I said, there are ways to control that. However, thinking about it, his mobility could easily have been hampered by the padding they said they used for protection. It would have had to have gone around his hips. Hopefully they can come up with something less cumbersome if that is an issue. |

I get that Winston wanted to show heart, but let's be real here, he isn't Drew Brees.
Brees with 4 fractures was still better than 95% of NFL starters. Winston, even uninjured, is not a very good QB. Ive sided with him, as I wanted him to do well, but I don't think he's the future. I think his performance last week in Q4, was more a product of the Falcons ineptitude, than it was of Winston playing well. Taysom may not have been perfect, but he didn't unravel like that. This offense, with this many weapons, should not be going into the 4th quarter with 3 points on the board. Pete C and DA need to do something, because the offense unfortunately looked a lot like last year, when we believed that Payton was holding Winston back and the lack of talent at WR was hurting the offense. Winston now has 2 all pros and 1 first round pick starting at receiver and can't get them the ball? As for Ingram, remember when he fumbled Vs Seattle and Payton benched him. That needs to happen. |

Saints safety Tyrann Mathieu
On the fight and Lattimore being ejected: "Obviously, he is one of the better cornerbacks in this league. For the majority of the game, guys weren't able to catch balls on him. I think that's a tactic that guys will use playing against him to get him out of his game. I think in that moment we all kind of have to respond." This right here. Sorta like when hockey teams will send in a Goon to start a fight, I can see them sending in a nothing player to poke the bear and get a penalty or ejection. I hope they have a meeting with ALL of the players and let them know that this is going to be an ongoing theme for the season if they can't get it under control. |
