Saints Rookie Trevor Penning Could Return Sooner Than Expected

Trevor Penning and the Saints got some good news this week. The first-round offensive tackle could return from his foot injury by early November, according to
. Saints coach Dennis Allen also provided some optimism, telling reporters that there’s hope the first-round pick will be able to play at some point this season, per
.

Even if he’s not ready to play by early November, Rapoport estimates that Penning should be healthy enough to practice. Either way, it sounds like the lineman should be good to go for the stretch run of the season, something that didn’t seem likely when we first learned of the rookie’s foot injury.
Penning initially suffered what was thought to be a “bad case of turf toe” during New Orleans’ preseason finale, but it was later revealed that the lineman suffered a ligament tear in his injured foot. Considering the timing and severity of the injury (plus the organization’s investment in the lineman), there was some fear that Penning may have to miss his entire rookie campaign.
The Northern Iowa product was selected by the Saints with the 19th-overall pick in this year’s draft, and he was expected to replace the departed Terron Armstead in the starting lineup. The rookie made headlines during training camp when he got into fights with teammates for three consecutive days. James Hurst was expected to start at LT even before Penning suffered his injury, and when the rookie returns, there’s a chance he’ll have to settle into a backup role.

Good just don't rush it. He could be our future for the next decade.

James Hurst ain't that dude at LT.

Ice up Penning !

Bump ...

Again, Trevor could possibly become a bookend LT for the next decade. No need to "rush" him back.

This is another toe/ligament injury that takes MONTHS to heal properly - see Michael Thomas.

I'm not a doctor but do know a former professional NFL RB that says this type of injury is EXTREMELY painful & a complete PITA to recover from.

Like this guy and hope he doesn't return until fully recovered. Would be great to have him start for next decade.

Can he show MT how to ice up and overcome a toe injury?

Mike would rather take the rest of the season off and still get paid instead of rehab and come back this year.

No. Mike, like every other player, would rather be on the field playing.

It was initially diagnosed as a turf toe. Go figure! Our doctors and Ochsner Clinic are at least consistent, even though they're usually wrong. Why are we still with them?

Turns out it is the same injury that Thomas suffered. I suppose some feel Penning "would rather take the rest of the season off and still get paid instead of rehab and come back this year." Actually, that's exactly what the Saints attempted to do with Thomas until finally deciding on surgery. Thomas attempted to rehab and come back until the team decided to go ahead and do the season ending surgery.

Not sure exactly. Given the circumstances are exactly the same as Thomas, "some" said this about Thomas. Just thinking that "some" should feel the same way about Penning to be consistent.

Not stirring any pot myself. Just noticing the stirring being done by "some" others.

I said it! And of course I have to see his posts because they’re quoted. Lol. Hey AG, I don’t care if it hurts your feelings that I feel that way. And I guarantee Thomas doesn’t care while he jumps into his money pool like Scooge McDuck.

Don't worry. You are not hurting my feelings whatsoever. I am just puzzled by the ignorant stance of some that high driven, elite athletes would actually rather sit back and collect a check than play the sport they trained for their entire lives.

(Note that the above reference to "ignorant" is not a label being given to any individual's intelligence or learning but instead implies "lacking knowledge, information, or awareness about a particular thing (ie. a player's personal motivation)" - Oxford Languages)

What's ignorant is to think that all players are motivated by the same things. Some players have held out multiple games because of contract disputes rather than play because of Money. Some players have been so talented that they never had to be highly motivated and driven to make it in the NFL. If all players are super motivated then why do some guys get the reputation of being extra hard workers, putting in countless hours watching film while other players get the rep of being lazy? Hell, Spencer Tillman was so highly motivated to play football that he gave up millions in order to go serve his country.

We've all heard the old Peyton Manning/Ryan Leaf story entering the 1998 Draft about being asked what they'd do if chosen number 1 overall. Your post is easily proven false. You have no idea what motivates these guys.

I never said I knew exactly what motivates these guys. I can only speak for athletes that I have known myself. I was pointing out that nobody knows, but to be successful is does take drive. Thomas has always had the reputation of being one of those extremely hard workers and driven to be the best.

Oh, and Spencer Tillman was a RB back in the 80's who became a broadcaster for CBS college football and teaming up with Shreveport's own Tim Brando calling games. I believe you meant Pat Tillman.

Penning is so aggressive he will undoubtedly receive a lot of penalty Flags. I think we should play him this year so that he has time to develop before the start of next season.

I am not sold on this guy at all. I know he is just coming back from injury so a bad first game for a rookie isn't all that much of a concern. What does concern me is he is a 1st round draft pick that got it handed to him in preseason by edge rushers who were hoping to make practice squad rosters. I seriously hope I am wrong, but this guy looks like a 1st round LT bust who will need to be moved to guard. We shall see...

The guy hasn't played a single meaningful game at his drafted position and you're labeling him a possible bust? I'm not sure what you are basing your evaluation on, but Penning only played SIX offensive snaps and one special team snap versus the 49er's. On offense he was brought in as an eligible receiver. He hasn't even played a single snap at left tackle yet.

After the first couple of practices I don't remember Penning having any further issues. He only had one penalty called on him during the preseason games (vs Texans) and it was declined.

Possible 1st round LT bust, not a complete bust, I think he may need to be moved to guard. His preseason performance, he was exceptional against the run, and he was horrible with pass blocking. As a rookie, it is one thing to get burned by starting edge rushers and a completely different thing to be burned by guys who will likely not make an NFL roster. Like I said, I hope I am wrong about him, but generally guys who play guard do not need to be taken in the 1st round and can be had with day 3 draft picks.

Once again, he hasn't taken a single snap in a meaningful game at LT. I honestly can't see any way he could have been evaluated at the position yet by anyone. Some of the best tackles in the game really didn't become efficient immediately out of the gate. Penning hasn't even been released from the gate, yet.

Saw him briefly in the San Fran game.

A simple analysis is that Trevor performed like a rusty rookie in his first game.

It happens (Armstead initially struggled). TP will improve with reps and live game action.

Penning will likely have a slow start to becoming a seasoned veteran with the more playing time he gets each week. As aggressive as he is I fully expect quite a few penalties in the beginning before he gets a grip on things. That's why I want to see him get playing time this year when it doesn't matter anymore compared to next year when we're starting fresh and have the chance of winning the Lombardi.

FYI ..

Trevor Penning has lisfranc injury.

Upcoming surgery. This is why I'm never in a "rush" to get players back after a toe/foot injury.

Per Nick Underhill.

Either that or it's the Terrible training staff and medical doctors. I'm leaning toward the training staff and lack of medical doctors with common sense. We keep rushing these players back out there and stunting their development.

Training staffs and team doctors have no impact on foot and toe injuries. That has more to do with playing surface and footwear. We notice those injuries to our players, but they are becoming more and more common all across the league.

So turf issues and/or shoe issues. Can the Saints get their money back from either of those manufacturers ?
