We have a week left before the deadline. I'm sure we'll make a move or two but it has to make sense. Not something that will hog tie us for the foreseeable future.

Trading Chauncey for peanuts didn’t make the most sense but they definitely rushed into that. We could have held him until the deadline.

No telling what went on behind the scenes with Ceedy. This is what is known. There is likely more never reported.

The New Orleans Saints trading defensive back C.J. Gardner Johnson to the Philadelphia Eagles shocked many. But according to one report, it was bound to happen.

On Aug. 30, the day of the NFL’s roster cutdown deadline, the New Orleans Saints made a rather shocking decision. They decided to trade safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson and a 2025 seventh-round pick to the Philadelphia Eagles in exchange for a 2023 fifth-round pick and a 2024 sixth-round pick. The move made Philadelphia’s active offseason that much better. But why would the Saints trade away their talented defensive back?

According to New Orleans Football’s Nick Underhill (subscription required), the Saints let it be known that they were not going to re-sign Gardner-Johnson “on his terms.” Not only that, but Underhill reports that Gardner-Johnson “stopped taking coaching.”

Saints: Reported reasons for C.J. Gardner-Johnson trade to Eagles

Gardner-Johnson, a 2019 fourth-round pick out of Florida, was entering the final year of his rookie contract, and set to hit free agency at the end of the 2022 campaign. Gardner-Johnson opted to hold in during training camp during negotiations.

NOLA.com’s Jeff Duncan noted in an article following the trade (subscription required) that during one practice, Gardner-Johnson was injured following a collision, and yelled at the team’s trainers “see, this is what you all wanted.” The quote, as Duncan notes, was “presumably being about his uncertain contract status.”

Head coach Dennis Allen spoke to the media about the trade, saying that the decision was not easy, but that he was confident in their defensive backfield, which he called “the deeper positions” that they had.

I put that on bad coaching and lack of leadership as well. Allen can’t keep his team under control and he overestimated the depth of the position group. Hindsight is 20/20, but I don’t think any of us where happy about that move regardless of the reports of his attitude.

All of those people that just bought their #22 jerseys certainly weren't happy.

I don’t disagree rez. It’s so obvious that I’m wondering if something happened we don’t know about. Like Maybe Ceedy was mad about not getting extended for big dollars and he said “Look, I don’t want to be here. Trade me or I am gonna make your team miserable”?

He’s always had the label of the kind of player that you hate on other people’s team but you love on your team. Well you don’t get that sort of rep without also rubbing a few people on your team wrong. I guess I’m saying that maybe he threatened to make things uncomfortable for everybody. Total speculation of course.

Yup. That's exactly what I was saying earlier. I have a feeling there's more to it that isn't public knowledge.

Let's not forget that he was the one that egged Thomas on until he snapped in practice. Yes, he's got an edge we liked, but sometimes those edges slice both ways.
