However, you gotta give Pete Carroll credit for knowing/feeling when to offload an aging QB. SP didn't have the same wherewithal evidently. Can you imagine what kind haul Brees would have netted the Saints? Could the Saints have upped an offer to move up one spot to get Mahomes? Were they even contacted? SP rode the stud horse named Drew Brees until he could not anymore... and then got the hell outta of the Saints. You can sorta say he tried to find a successor over the years with the ever so crazy reaches at QB. Yes, finding a worthy replacement at QB is easier said than done, obviously. It still doesn't take away from having the balls to trade a player before he's completely expired for value, like Coach Pete did. It is a team game after all, right? Being friends with a player clouds judgement, the kind of judgement that advances teams positively.

I can't see Payton wanting to go somewhere that has given up so much capital. Don't forget, the decision where to go, if anywhere, is totally in Payton's hands. Money won't be a factor, either, since he's making as much as the top paid coaches already with his broadcasting contract.
For example, you can have three teams willing to pony up three first rounders and one other only willing to give a single second rounder for his services. If Payton sees the last one as the only landing spot he'd consider, the Saints must decide to simply take the second rounder or refuse to release him altogether. They really have very little leverage at all.
