We Need a Center - Should Call JC Tretter
McCoy is on IR. Ruiz can slide over, but constant changes disrupt our line, so if we could replace McCoy without moving Ruiz it would be less change. Also Peat is injured so that means even more chaos. I worry Kamara could get hurt with some practice squad scrub rolling up on his knee.
JC Tretter was an all pro center. He is a very smart player. He was a top free agent who went unsigned this offseason. After going unsigned he 'retired' but a recently retired player who was a quality starter less than a year ago could always come back, its worth a call. The general understanding is that he went unsigned because as president of the NFLPA he made a lot of issues about player safety and was blackballed by Roger Goodell. My theory is that although most teams would be crazy to sign him, Goodell would sick the refs on them like mad dogs, the refs are already going against us to the max and can't do any worse without making it too obvious to casual fans of other teams. We have nothing to lose. In fact, it would be in our interests to make every possible personnel move that would anger Roger Goodell that we can, bringing on everyone in legal and PR disputes with the league. The thing is, Goodell is already punishing us to the max with the refs, he has already done his worst, and he is getting away with it. But we are not doing our worst back, we are just suffering in silence. If instead we did more things like bringing on Brian Flores or JC Tretter, Roger Goodell's interests would be harmed too, the podium we gave them would hurt Goodell's interests just as much as the bad officiating harms us. It would be a lose-lose situation. And the thing is, you need a lose-lose situation to arrive at a truce, truce's never happen unless a lose-lose situation forces one. If Goodell is able to harm us without us retaliating in any way, he has no reason to ever stop the bad officiating, because the more decades he continues it until he dies at 100 years old, the stronger a message it sends to other teams and owners and coaches and gms to never mess with Roger. But if we are harming him back, that changes the equation. Suddenly messing with us has consequences. Suddenly in a smoky room Goodell has to mention 'hey I think the officiating you guys have been getting needs to be looked out, we will get you some seats on the committee, and by the way isn't it great to have so and so out of the league..." I think luring JC Tretter out of retirement, if he will agree to a reasonable salary, would be a solid football move given our injury predicament. We need an experiences center or guard to shore up our oline to survive the season. I also think it would be a good strategic move given our league predicament. You don't stop bullies by being nice and obedient and trying to please them, you stop them by fighting back and sticking a finger in their eye. |

We better fill up the printer before we print out the injury report or we'll run out of ink and paper. If this team was a ship I'd name her Titanic. Be on the lookout for icebergs!

Part of the injury problem is perception. Other teams don't trade away half their early and mid round draft picks to move up on most of their selections so they have more young players with upside to step up when injuries happen. Some of the injuries are forgotten because a young player has already stepped up. We lack a depth of high upside young players due to the Loomis Method of roster management so when we have injuries its much more evident with scrubs and grandpas stepping in. The Cowboys lost a good veteran left tackle but were ok because they had a high first round pick also. The Giants have an expensive veteran WR who can't get himself right and see the field but they are in no rush because their young guys seem to be better. Other teams hardly complain that their Julio Jones or AJ Green or whoever is out because they have young guys ready to step up. But when Stafford and Kupp go down the Rams freak out because they traded all their picks, and likewise for us with Thomas and Lattimore.
