Re: Cards, Texans permitted to interview Sean Payton

Broncos have zeroed in on Sean Payton, but there’s one potential holdup

By Michael Gallagher | Last updated 1/24/23

There’s no question that after the failings of Vance Joseph, Vic Fangio and Nathaniel Hackett, the Denver Broncos want to hit a home run with their next head coaching hire.

And according to a report from Fox Sports’ Colin Cowherd, the Broncos reportedly want to hire Sean Payton. Quarterback Russell Wilson has even reportedly told Broncos owners that Payton is the coach he wants.

But according to Broncos insider Mike Klis of 9News, even if Payton accepts the job, the real question is can Denver afford the former AP NFL Coach of the Year?

“[The Broncos] have a budget; I do not think that they’re going to go $25M and I don’t think they’re going to get into a bidding thing.” Klis said during a recent radio interview with 104.3 The Fan. “It comes down to, ‘Do you want the job or not? And do you want it because of money or do you want it because you want to be a head coach and win that second Super Bowl and help this franchise here in Denver?’”

NFL analyst Jordan Schultz of The Score has suggested Payton’s price tag could be higher than what the Broncos might feel comfortable dishing out.

“[Payton] wants at least $20M a year,” Schultz said. “But that’s also the going rate for a top tier head coach.”

Payton is likely looking to top the list of the highest-paid head coaches in the NFL in 2023, which include New England’s Bill Belichick ($20M per year), Seattle’s Pete Carroll ($15M per year) and Los Angeles’ Sean McVay ($14M per year), according to Pro Football Network.

I was told there is no such thing as bidding for a coach's services.

I'd like to speak with the manager.

The article is referring to a team's compensation to Payton in the terms of bidding, not compensation to the Saints for the rights to Payton. Two dramatically different things. I never said there couldn't or wouldn't be bidding for Payton's services. Quite the contrary, I've insisted that this is where the only bidding would take place.

“[The Broncos] have a budget; I do not think that they’re going to go $25M and I don’t think they’re going to get into a bidding thing.” Klis said during a recent radio interview with 104.3 The Fan. “It comes down to, ‘Do you want the job or not? If Payton finally feels that one of the "bidder's" offer is acceptable then it moves on to the discussion of terms for the rights between that team and the Saints. At that point there will be no bidding, just negotiating.

I've been listening to 104.3 the Fan here in Denver the past 2 days. All the talk has been about the souring on Payton and the interest now in Demeco Ryans and David Shaw. Looks like the asking price is driving people away compiled with his salary demands. I wouldn't be surprised if he went back to FOX.

They are likely thinking that going with Quinn, or someone else, and keeping all of their picks is better than getting Payton while giving up their late 1st and a couple of others picks.

If all of the teams sour on his salary or power demands it may never really get to the stage where the Saints can even try to negotiate picks.

And I agree, I wouldn't be surprised at all if he just waits another year. He's making high end coaching pay right now with his TV gig working 10 hours a week instead of 100 hours as a coach. He can afford to wait.

Everyone relax.

Saints didn't officially name DA as head coach until February 7th and he'd been with the organization 16 years!!
