Carr may allow Pete Carmichael to open up the play book and we'll see an exciting offense again. Someone tell DA to take the blinders off Pete and let him play to win.

That just got me thinking, Rugs. How often did Dalton audible to the "safer" play last season. Carmichael has never been that conservative. I can't see Allen as having any influence on offensive playcalling during a game. That leaves the QB as the only other person able to affect the playcall.

But Carr definitely has the ability to stretch the field, something Dalton lacked horribly.

I like the move on paper, if this team can't garner 10 wins minimum DA has to go. Carr should bring us at least 3 more wins on paper assuming the defense plays like last year or better. Saints should be at the least the giants to put it in perspective. Hopefully they draft well and and can remain as healthy as possible.

Health is key. That hurt us bad last season.
…well that and piss poor qb play

There is no reason why (well, there is with Dennis and Pete) the Saints shouldn't win the NFC South in 2023. At least ON PAPER.

Tampa, Carolina & Atlanta all have serious QB concerns this off-season.

But then again, we allowed a QB with a QBR rating of 2.8 beat us in the dome last season, so...

Injuries WILL happen. This is a violent sport. The key is having QUALITY DEPTH. See Cincy, Philly, Niners, Cowboys, and the Chiefs.

By next year his deal is going to be looking like much more of a bargain than some believe.

Terrific! Now get a RB at 29 and Hooker in the 3rd! The rest defense!

So we drafting Hooker for our backup/future starter... since the Derek Carr deal is really a two year deal at $30 million per year?

Only if he performs as badly as it appears a few "fans" around here hope. Personally, I am hoping for success for my Saints and a return to playoff football. I am hoping Carr is our QB for most of the next decade because that means we are experiencing that success.

IMO, I don't think Dennis and co are interested in drafting Hooker TBH.

Especially since so many are anointing Carr as the "savior" @ QB .

I'm ready for the draft though :bng:. We have HOLES.

K anointing Carr as our Savior? Not sure enthusiasm and an optimistic outlook for the future qualifies as anointing Carr as our Savior. Being an QB centric league it is hard to imagine that the signing of Carr does not improve the outlook for the team. Most analyst have Carr rate between 10-12 rated QB in the NFL and top 5 in the NFC. How many games over the last two seasons would reasonably have had different outcomes with Carr’s level of QB play.

It’s just the other side of the discussion on B&G that signing Carr makes no difference because coaching, roster makeup and cap numbers will doom the Saints organization to mediocrity.

I believe it to be honest opinion and perspective from both sides of the discussion,

Success or continued mediocrity? We will have that answer by the end of 2023.

WhoDat since September 17 1967 in Tulane Stadium when on the very first game in Saints history John Gilliam ran back the opening kickoff for a 94 yard touchdown return. The Saints won that game 27-13. 1 of 80,000+ to witness the start of WhoDat Nation. :bng: :chug:

It appears that optimism is something that escapes some people, WW. I was in those stands back in 1967 in spirit.

While I was a fan from well before that first game, I didn't get to attend one until many years later.

We need to solidify the O-line with one of our top selections in the draft this year so RB's have holes to hit and Carr has time in the pocket. For me, it's a toss up between DT and OG with our first pick in the draft this year but, as you pointed out, we need a RB too.

Rezburna made an excellent point in another thread that RB should be one of our easiest needs to satisfy. He pointed out that there are many good options in free agency that can be had on the cheap and a draft full that can be added for even less.

Yes, there are holes. Every team has holes to fill at this time of year. The bulk of free agency hasn't even started yet and the draft is still 50 days away. Plenty of time, and opportunity, to fill those holes.

Not sure if this has been stated but Carr's contract is for $60M guaranteed. of course he could earn more but we got him for $30MM a year basically

My nephew grew up in Bay area and has been a Raiders fan all his life. He thinks it will be a good move for us. Apart from Carr never having played with a good D, he points out that he will likely thrive in a Dome environment. Oakland (I’ve been there myself) frequently had blackouts and poor field conditions with iffy weather. Trading that in for the SD should make him more comfortable.

Agreed, I think it would take more than I’d like to give up to acquire him, just thought it was interesting that they’d move him.

So you're saying we would need to give up Michael Thomas, Eric McCoy & possibly Taysom Hill in order to acquire Henry :p ?

Several quality players are getting released because of the way their caps are managed. Releasing players is their way of creating cap space. The Saints, and now several other teams, structure the contracts in a way to keep those players AND create cap space. Personally I'd rather keep good players WHILE being able to add free agents.

Reminds me of those NFL players of the early 90s. Tough, team guy & leaves it all on the field every single Sunday.

We need more players like Hill.

Yeah his stats for 2022:

9 Receptions 77 yards 2 TDs
96 Rushes 575 yards 7 TDS
13 of 19 passing for 240 yards and 2 TDs
3 KO returns for 69 yards

You don’t get into sports management to save a billionaire owner some money on payroll. Fans don’t tune in every week or spend thousands of dollars on tickets and traveling to support a team that’s trying to tank. Sports are entertainment, and the Saints are embracing that by doing all they can to maximize their resources. You don’t have to pay interest on future cap space or win more games for having unspent cap space. You play to win the game and that extends to the front office.

We can agree or disagree on whether Carr is the right guy for the job, and not every team has the appetite to pay out a bunch of signing bonuses every year, but it’s not a moral failing to try and win now. In an industry where few people are fortunate to hold the same job for even three years, the only real choice is to live in the moment and compete on Sundays.

Fox Sports’ Nick Wright couldn’t be more wrong about the Saints and the salary cap

That is Nicks role on the show and I think he comes by it naturally. Guy is walking talking repository of sports fact and statistics and can but together a strong counterpoint or position to Kevin Broussard’s commentary or for them comment on his narrative. Good show really enjoy when Nick does not go to the absolute Darkside on issues.
