DT Our Biggest Need?

With David Onyemata and Shy Tuttle both signing with new teams, looks like our biggest need going into the draft is now defensive tackle. Looking at the lists of defensive linemen on draft sites, I admit I don't recognize most of the names. Jalen Carter is out of reach for us at 29. One guy who did stand out to me, but is predicted to go in later rounds, is Byron Young from Alabama.

Who are some of your favorites at the position that could end up a New Orleans Saint?

it's a deep draft this year for the DL. Maybe that's what the Saints were looking at.

I’m thinking they’ll double dip in FA and draft for D line. I hate to see so many go, but going younger is a good thing

Update

The Saints also signed DT Khalen Saunders (Chiefs)

Almost forgot the J E T S are the Saints' farm team. :D

Re: DT Our Biggest Need?

I could be wrong however I think Khalen will enter camp as "the" guy @ DT. Played in 16 games last season for the Chiefs.

And only 26 years of age.

D Line coach Todd Grantham has something to work with in those trenches.

Landed 2 free agents at DT today, add a little more via draft and the d-line rebuild project is complete.

Solid moves on the D line.

Filling up those holes very quickly will help with drafting the BPA next month.

What's the cap difference I wonder, had we kept the other two?

Are these new additions less injury prone?

Haven't seen any numbers, but I'd expect the cap numbers to be lower for sure. At least factoring in what Onyemata got on his new deal.

In an article on NOF Saunders had some injury issue early on one being a dislocated elbow. But sounds like not anything report in recent seasons.

I like this move a lot.

Feeling better about DT.

Now do RB.

I was hearing today that it may be among the last positions to be filled for many teams. Out of 44 free agent RB's there are still 33 of them out there. Their market may not pick up much until after the draft and the longer they remain out there the cheaper they are going to be.

AsylumGuido 03-15-2023 03:29 PM

Re: DT Our Biggest Need?

I also heard that while there are some very good DT's in the top end of the draft the quality depth is pretty shallow and that's why there's all of the early action in the free agent market.

Our top needs in order: general manager, head coach, offensive coordinator, offensive guard, running back.

Re: DT Our Biggest Need?

Absolutely top need. I’d draft two. I’d also like to see safety, cb and guard. But for sure DT has to come first as long as we don’t track to much

And just like that Mickey finds 39 million sign a QB, a TE, a WR, a backup QB, 2 not 1 DT’s and leading touchdown RB in 2022 … by the end of day one of free agency. Life is like a box of Chocolates 🤣

I still think we draft a DT or two.

Re: DT Our Biggest Need?

Getting the two DT's at an affordable rate was key. We don't have to panic and take DT at 29 or 40 out of sheer need, can take BPA.

Seems like the game plan every year.

With Peat restructuring, we could use a body or two there to grroom.

Re: DT Our Biggest Need?

DT may no longer be our biggest need, but we should probably address it with one of our first three picks this year. Give me a TE/WR, OG with the other two picks, then build up our depth by not trading up for players with the remaining picks and pick role players.

You are on fire Rugby. I personally want either the ND or Georgia TE with our second round pick.
