Boston the lens we view the draft thru and shaped individual assessments of team needs is diverse, varied, researched, insightful and all have merit. The organization does exactly the same thing with the benefit of direct access to the players, their coaches, game firm with the teams short and long term plan to address those needs. The Saints are not a “get all the bodies you can” from a strategic point of view. Many feel that is a foundational approach and objective to the draft … Not The Saints. Is what it is.

But as history tells us the Saints will do whatever it takes to get the player(s) they like with whatever capital is available to them or can be traded for.

The first 3 picks this draft were all needs and I think considering where we were at in the draft order Ireland and team did a great job with these 3 picks. A day 1 starter and 2 rotational pieces at the minimum and Foskey or Miller might be a real surprise by the start of the season.

OG was a must not just for depth but next year we have 1 maybe 2 OG position that might be needed next season. Again between Saldiveri and Hurst one of those stand a good chance of being a starter at OG especially if Penning secures the starting LT position.

The QB pick value pick for a prospect to hopefully replace Winston salary more than Winston himself. But there is no way we have Winston as a long term backup QB. If Haener shows well this offseason Winston could end up being trade material for a team in need of a QB to step up and in due to injury. At a minimum step in the Backup QB position next year.

For these reasons and the ability to take the long view on Haeners development while we have Carr. Nothing ventured nothing gained.

As fas the rest of the draft, interesting but only time will give us any real insight.

Foster Moreau’s signing is a good indication that inside the organization that the outlook on his treatment plan and returning to football was already known inside 5800 Airline Dr going into this years draft. Making the selection of a TE in this draft not so critical while those in the media and we fans could not wrap our head around not drafting a TE. Additional a huge plus over drafting a TE is that Moreau is an experienced TE that has played with our QB and been productive.

I have to trust that the Saints identified the players they liked and thought they could get. They had a plan going in, with a combination of the draft falling their way and trading up to get players they liked, Free Agent signings to compete for not just roster spots but starting roles in all the areas of need.

I would like to think every player we signed will have a positive impact on the Saints Team and roster. But that’s just not the nature of the beast. We will all be back next off-season discussing this years hits, the misses and assigning fault with analytical certainty and stellar GM and coaching insight on January 8, 2024.

Then start the whole process over again for the next batch players needed and why. God willing we are all here to participate.
